Why is Hug Day celebrated on May 22?

On the 22nd of May we celebrate the Hug Day, a symbolic date that brings the message of peace and love among people. But do you know how this celebration came about?

It all started when the Australian Juan Mann created the campaignFree Hugs Campaign“, in 2004. The aim was to offer people passing by Pitt Street Mall, a famous street in Sydney, free hugs to influence them to reproduce this gesture of affection.

The campaign became famous when Juan offered a hug to the leader of the band Sick Puppies, who called him to record a music video with the group. Afterwards, the initiative became popular and began to be carried out in other countries.

In Portugal, theLeiria Happiness Day“, a campaign inspired by Juan’s, promotes free hugs in busy places every year on May 22nd. This has been happening since 2007.

Other countries such as Spain and Brazil also adopted this initiative on the same date. That way, everyone has the opportunity to give and receive a hug – and who doesn’t, right?
