Protector of Animals: Pray Saint Francis of Assisi

On October 4th, Saint Francis of Assisi Day is celebrated. He served God with compassion, humility, faith and detachment from any material possessions.

His life, stories, teachings and miracles have passed through many generations and will endure for many centuries to come. Pope John Paul II, in 1979, proclaimed him the patron saint of ecologists. He is also patron of the city of Assisi, Italy.

He is also considered the patron saint of animals, poor and needy people, nature and patron saint of Italy.

Francis of Assisi was born in the city of Assisi, Umbria, Italy, in 1182. He belonged to the bourgeoisie, and from that condition he took all the benefits. Like his father, he tried trading as a career, but soon abandoned the idea as he was not very good at it. Therefore, he sought to achieve more status and material power with military glories.

But, in 1206, Francis of Assisi abandoned everything and everyone to start living a new cycle. Wandering and ragged, in a true affront and protest against their bourgeois society. He gave himself totally to a lifestyle founded on poverty, simplicity of life, and total love for all creatures.

With a few friends he started what would become the Order of Friars Minor or Franciscans. With Santa Clara, his beloved friend, he founded the Ordem das Damas Pobres. In 1221, inspired by their way of life, the Third Order was born for consecrated lay people.

Saint Francis of Assisi was a creature of peace and good, tender and loving. He cared for and loved animals, plants and all of nature.

Saint Francis Prayer for Peace

Sir! Make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hate, may I bring love.

Where there is offensive words, shall I bring forgiveness.

Where there is discord, may I bring unity.

Where there are doubts, may I bring faith.

Where there is error, may I bring the truth.

Where there is despair, I may bring hope.

Where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Where there is darkness, let me bring light.

O Master, make me search further:

to console, to be consoled;

to understand, to be understood;

to love, to be loved.

It is in giving that we receive.

It is in forgiving that one is forgiven.

And it is by dying that one lives for eternal life.

Amen.
