Today, April 23, is a public holiday in Rio de Janeiro. Cariocas and devotees from all over the world celebrate Saint George’s Day. Patron saint of Portugal, England and Catalonia, São Jorge is also the protector of soldiers, soldiers, toolmakers and railway workers. Saint George faced and defeated his enemies and dragons, which today could be our beasts and problems in life.

Devotion to São Jorge grew in Brazil by slaves who, forbidden to worship their Orixás, then began to make their requests, cults and rituals outside the churches, associating the image of São Jorge to Ogun. Ogun is the Orisha of war, fire and technology. He who created machines for agriculture and taught manual labor. He taught men to work iron with fire. With an impatient and determined genius, this Orisha uses the sword to open his paths and defeat his enemies. He always comes first, before everyone else. He represents the born leader. Ogun uses his power and his sword to quickly help the one who invokes him. But if he is invoked in a negative way, he will let his sword fall on the unjust one.

It protects farmers, soldiers, artisans and their children and all people who ask for their help in struggles, justice or even better living conditions. Orisha of the earth element, Ogun is full of energy and entrepreneur and his decisions are quick. He loves freedom, but it is his lack of patience that makes him sometimes rude, although he is not without human warmth.

Ogun São Jorge is very requested to break demands and open paths. Drive away injustices and enemies.

Prayer to Saint George

O Saint George, my Holy Warrior and protector, invincible in faith in God, who sacrificed himself for him, bring hope to your face and open my ways.
