You must have heard someone say “my ear is red, they are talking about me”. There are also those who say that if the ear in question is the right, they are speaking well, if it is the left ear, they are speaking badly. But, after all, why do we get the red ear? Is it because they’re really talking about us?

Dermatologist Sueli Coelho says that this story is nothing more than a myth. For the doctor, deputy head of the Dermatology Service at the Clementino Fraga University Hospital, linked to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), redness in the ears is common and occurs because of a natural dilation of blood vessels, allowing greater passage of blood – hence the reddish color and “warmth” sensation.

According to her, most of the time, “the process is linked to the nervous system of the human being, appearing at the time when the person feels momentarily pressured, worried, distressed or when they feel criticized or negatively evaluated by someone”.

As a process linked to each person’s body, the dermatologist ironically analyzes this legend associated with gossip. “If that were the case, then it can be said that a person would be talking badly about themselves since, in many situations, the individual puts himself alone in the pressure situation, causing the vessels to fill”, she said.

“Vodilation eventually leaves the ear red, which can cause an unpleasant burning sensation. The causes can be psychological, but also physiological, such as some unexplained discharge generated by an internal mechanism of the organism”, he explained. The use of certain types of medications may also be involved.

Sueli Coelho points out that there is no possibility of a blood vessel bursting, creating damage to health. “Even if the person feels an unpleasant burning sensation in the ear, the blood vessel wall is dynamic and can dilate and return to its natural size because of control mechanisms. After a few seconds or minutes, everything returns to normal”, he added. .
