You may have already wondered what is the origin of the symbols that represent the twelve signs of the zodiac. The answer is more obvious than it seems when we stop to analyze it. When observing the characteristics of the natives of each sign, our ancestors related to what they observed in animals and other symbols that surrounded them.

This interpretation later gave rise to what we know as astrological symbols, present in birth charts and horoscopes. Below, you can find out a little more about each of them.

Aries

Cancer

Represented by a crab, the sign has a symbol that refers to the breasts of a woman, whose desire to nurture and protect reflects the typical Cancerian. The animal, with its paws like pincers, is also reminiscent of the Cancerian tendency to cling to things and people. The sign of Libra is the only one that has an inanimate object as its symbol: the scale. Scorpion

The sign has as symbols the scorpion, as the instinctive side, and the eagle, for the ability to rise above instinct. The astrological representation alludes to the scorpion’s tail, which crawls along the ground and hides in hidden places. A centaur with a bow and arrow represents Sagittarius. The mythological creature, whose upper part is that of a man and the lower part that of a horse, suggests a duality: the intellectual capacity and potential wisdom of man, on the one hand, and the strength and speed of the horse, on the other.
