The Solstice is considered the height of summer, the moment when the Sun, during its movement on the celestial sphere, reaches the greatest declination in latitude, measured from the Equator line. In ancient pagan traditions people used to jump over bonfires to bring purification, fertility, health and love.

In the northern hemisphere, this day is considered one of the holiest of the year for the Celts and Druids, who believed that the time was ideal to honor and revere the sun as our great source of vital energy.

They met, on the day of the Summer Solstice, to revere the sunrise on Earth’s megaliths, which are monuments made with large blocks of stone. A curiosity is that the word comes from the Greek mega (big) and lithos (stone).

This originated the term “litha”, which is how the Celts called the Summer Solstice.

To this day there are, around the world, many stone circles and megalithic monuments aligned with the sunrise of the Summer Solstice. Among them, the largest of all is Stonehenge, in southeastern England.
