Is astrology a science?

Is astrology science? Even though it is not considered as such, Astrology works. This is explained by astrologer Alexey Dodsworth in the video below.

Astrology is not considered a science because it does not obey the contemporary scientific method. What does that mean? That it doesn’t matter that this study is demonstrated to be functional through statistics. That is, even if an astrologer hits the interpretation of 90 out of 100 Star Charts that he analyses, yet Astrology cannot be considered a science.

To be science, it is necessary to have an explanatory theory

It is enough to think that the word “science”, nowadays, requires an explanatory theory. And Astrology doesn’t have a theory that justifies why it works. If an astrologer says, for example, that this explanation is based on the energies that reach us from the planets, it is not true. After all, energy is something you measure, and to date, no one has measured planetary energies. So if we can’t measure it, we’re talking about something that doesn’t exist. You might be thinking: “but the fact that we can’t measure it doesn’t mean that a certain thing doesn’t exist either”. True, but it is also not possible to say that something exists just because there are effects of it.

Some critics of astrology often say that astrology is not considered a science because of gravity. What a big nonsense. These people claim that if gravity matters, then an airplane’s should matter more than Pluto’s. And they compare: the gravity of the plane on a baby is much greater than the gravity of this planet, which is very far away.

There are still those who say that Quantum Physics proved that Astrology works because “everything is interconnected”. This is a big mistake, since Quantum Physics is particle physics. And planets are not particles. Jupiter, for example, is not the size of an electron.

So how is it possible to prove that Astrology works?

Just in practice. When you meet an honest astrologer who doesn’t say vague things that fit everyone, such as “I see you are going through a life-changing moment” or “I see you are a person with untapped potentials” – something that anyone listening to can relate to or find to be true.

By avoiding this vague discourse and going for “is it or is it not”, it is possible to say that Astrology is falsifiable. What does falsifiability mean? When something is true or false.

If an astrologer uses a punctual speech that the information is true or false, you can tell if he was right or wrong.

Many astrologers use vague speeches and do not follow a technique, while others analyze the Astrology chart very intuitively, which implies errors. But if you talk to professionals who use precise techniques, they will say the same thing without contradicting themselves. They will be right or wrong, although when using the astrological technique they are right much more than they are wrong.

That is why the fact of demonstrating in practice that Astrology works makes no difference to calling it a science, since we do not know how it works. And to be science it is not enough that it works, it is necessary to explain why.
