Intake of essential oils: what should I know? |

The ingestion of essential oils has been a very controversial subject these days and I think it is always worth clarifying the most frequent doubts and questions so that the information reaches you in a safe and correct way.

First, I want to make it clear that I am not against ingestion, but I do not see the need for this form of use in my appointments. When I feel that the client needs something beyond essential oils, I use other holistic techniques or refer other health professionals, such as therapists from other areas and doctors.

Aromatherapy can support several issues, but sometimes it is necessary to have the look of another medical professional, such as a psychiatrist or physiotherapist, for example.

How to use essential oils

The most frequent ways of using essential oils are inhalation, through smell, and absorption, through the skin. Both are very efficient and bring significant results. My clients always bring testimonials of the effectiveness of these forms of use.

If you are interested in learning more about the issue of essential oils ingestion, I recommend the Netflix series “Industry of Healing”. The first episode talks exactly about this and highlights the precautions related to intake, bringing the information in a very coherent way.

There is an important warning from Lora Cantele, clinical aromatherapist since 2003: “there are very few situations in which I would say that it would be beneficial to ingest essential oils. They can burn the mucous membranes over time, and they can cause internal damage from the inside there is no reason for digestion.”

The series presents the case of a person who followed the instructions on intake he received from the essential oil company and from people in social media groups and developed a severe allergy to two substances, his body covered in dermatitis.

I addressed some issues related to contraindications in this article, including the importance of seeking information about the company that produces essential oils, as well as identifying the professional training of the person who is indicating the use of essential oil. It makes all the difference in treatment.

Many people who sell essential oils and encourage their intake have no training in Aromatherapy and use the argument that oils promote the cure of diseases.

According to Dr. Joy Boyles, researcher, educator and author of the book “The Chemistry of Essential Oils”, among other titles, essential oils are not regulated as medicines and there are strict rules about how to use them in the flavors industry”.

Oils help to deal with illnesses, but there is no evidence to prove the cure as many claim. “Real Aromatherapy does not claim that essential oils cure”, points out the researcher.

A central question that the series raises is: what works for one, doesn’t work for the other”, hence the importance of individual and targeted follow-up.

I’m not here to judge or speak ill of companies that sell essential oils, quite the contrary, I come here to warn you to seek information and professionals who can bring confidence and responsibility in the use of oils and reputable companies that will offer their customers products of quality.

One drop of essential oil has over 200 chemical components

In my articles, I always emphasize that the indication of essential oils must be made by an aromatherapist, a professional who knows the therapeutic benefits of oils in depth and is able to prescribe correctly.

Working with Aromatherapy requires a lot of study and dedication. There are more than 300 essential oils and in each drop of oil we have approximately more than 200 chemical components, so the indication must respect the individuality of each one, especially considering its contraindications.

If you want to know more about essential oils for safe use on a daily basis, I have published several articles where I teach you how to make some products, always respecting the safety limits. You can also deepen your knowledge by scheduling an appointment with an aromatherapist or enrolling in a basic course.

Essential oil is not only a “good smell”, it does an incredible therapeutic job and helps us a lot, but it can also harm us, so before using it, seek information, remove all your doubts and use it correctly and safely.

The misuse and indiscriminate use of essential oils can have future consequences, as excess can harm your body in the long term.
