Santa Ana was married to São Joaquim, a person of great influence, especially in the region of Jerusalem, where they lived. Her husband, in addition to influence, belonged to the royal family of David. Despite the great prestige, the couple would go through great difficulties along the way, due to a difficulty in generating children.

It was believed that lack of fertility was a punishment from God. Saint Joaquim also suffered the judgments first hand, mainly by the priests. They criticized the fact that he had no children. Despite all the suffering, both Santa Ana and São Joaquim remained believers, praying to God and asking for a miracle.

The miracle of fertility

Once, São Joaquim decided to walk through the desert, without anyone. He would spend 40 days there, without contact with the community. It was on one of the days when he was walking in the desert that he received a visit from an angel. The being announced the realization of a miracle. According to the angel’s words, God had granted the couple’s wish.

At the same moment, the same angel also appeared to Our Lady of Santana, telling the same story. Shortly after São Joaquim returned to his house, Santa Ana became pregnant. Although we Westerners know the mother of Jesus by the name of Mary, her name in Hebrew was Mirian. The change in writing occurred due to the translation into Latin, a language commonly used in biblical texts. The word Mirian, in turn, means “lady of light”, a clear allusion to the role that Mary would play in generating Jesus Christ.

Because Santa Ana is not so well known

One of the reasons St. Anne goes unnoticed is the fact that everything about her is in an unofficial Church book. The will as we know it is just one part of a much larger material. Not all books were accepted by Catholic authorities. Information about Nossa Senhora de Santa is in the Gospel of James, which does not contain the official Bible.

James would have written about Our Lady in the first century. For some reason, the Catholic authorities decided not to include the gospel in the official work. But the material remains available, having been cited over the years by several Catholic priests, who believe in the story of Nossa Senhora de Santana.

Santa Ana had a calm life, but full of challenges, mainly due to social criticism. Being unable to bear children, she received the divine miracle of fertility, giving birth to Mary, who in turn is the Mother of Jesus. That’s why Nossa Senhora de Santana is considered the patron saint of grandparents.
