Lammas ritual: time to celebrate prosperity

The Lammas ritual is one of the 4 rituals or “sabbats” considered the most important and magical of the year and is part of the eight sacred rituals of the Celtic wheel of life – the annual wheel. These peoples believed that this was the time to give thanks for the first harvest of the year, in which they shared the harvested grains and made bread to commemorate and celebrate. Lammas is also known as Lughnasadh, Luganash, First Harvest Festival, August Eve, Festival of Plenty, Harvest Sabbath or Grain Festival.

It was also the time to make offerings to the gods, asking to maintain Earth’s fertility, ensuring prosperity for the coming months. In the old days, this ritual was performed inside a forest and honored the ripening of seeds.

The Celtic Wheel of Life is made up of eight rituals that celebrate and connect with specific energies. Are they:

Samhain (Halloween Night) Litha (Summer Solstice) Imbolc (Night of Fire) Mabon (Autumn Equinox) Beltane (Love Ritual) Yule (Winter Solstice) Lammas (Harvest and Prosperity Ritual) Ostara (Spring Equinox)

The name Lughnasadh (pronounced lunasá) has its origins in a very old Celtic agricultural festival, which celebrates the harvest in honor of Lugh, the Celtic god of the sun. According to mythology, he is considered the greatest warrior among the Celts, as he defeated the giants who demanded human sacrifices. The name Lammas means “bread dough” and originates from one of the traditions of this ritual of light, which is to make bread with the first grains harvested for celebration and thanksgiving.

The sacred food of this ritual is the bread or cake made with the grains, which represent the harvest, and must be shared as sacred food among the members of the coven (family of light), family and friends. The loaves must be placed on altars infused with light to increase the flow of prosperity in our lives. In addition to bread and cake, other traditional foods of this ritual are grain pies, corn, nuts and also the typical fruits of the time. Traditional drinks are: beer and chamomile tea or cider. The incenses are those of aloe, acacia, roses and sandalwood.

In addition to the traditional “Mass of Lugh”, in this ritual it was also an ancient tradition to make straw dolls (from corn or wheat), representing the Gods and the great mother Goddess who provides everything. These dolls were considered as amulets for expanding prosperity throughout the year, until the following Lammas, when they were burned in the ritual bonfire.

In this ritual we must also honor and become more aware of the fertility aspect.

Some authors celebrate this ritual in February, in the southern hemisphere, as they reverse the dates of the Celtic wheel of rituals, accompanying the inversion of the seasons, which are different for each hemisphere. However, according to the oldest and most sacred Celtic and Druid lineages, only the dates of the seasons should be changed according to each hemisphere. The 4 rites between the solstices and equinoxes (Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain) must be celebrated on the same date, regardless of the hemisphere where you are.

Ritual works awareness of abundance in your life

Each year, the Lammas Ritual works with specific energies that are linked to the configurations of the moment and the active energies of that period. Within the energy of each year, some customs and magical spells are more emphasized to access and integrate the energy of that ritual.

However, in all its aspects, this ritual of light always brings work with the awareness of prosperity, plenty and abundance.

It’s time to give thanks, celebrate and ask for more prosperity in our lives.

On Lammas Day, we must become aware of the harvest already achieved this year and share it with those around us. It is always a time to honor the flow of infinite abundance and connect more and more with it.

Lammas Ritual in 2019

In 2019, the Lammas ritual, which is usually celebrated between 8/1 and 4/8, will have energy acting between 7/28 and 8/2. This is because, in a few years, the current momentum setting may change the period.

In that specific year, the date comes to bring much more of a cleansing energy than of abundance itself, inviting us to let go of everything that blocks the flow of prosperity in our lives. It is time to do a self-analysis and reflection on everything that is superfluous and is being used with exaggeration or waste.

It is worth remembering that this is a ritual of great seriousness and ceremonial order. Therefore, as with all Magical Wheel of Life rituals, it is important that the Rite of Lammas be guided by a high-grade initiated priest or priestess. The priest is a spiritual leader, one who has the proper training and knowledge to carry out the rituals in such a way that it is fully established in the positive and worked in a correct, complete and integrated way, leaving no room for negativity. In addition, a duly qualified leader is needed to know how to direct what should be worked on each year on that date.

Being done in an integrated way, this magical ritual brings great benefit to the individual, promoting a deep purification of the blockages regarding prosperity in their bodies. The person receives a great energy charge and power that can be directed towards maintaining and expanding prosperity in his life.

It is a moment of contact and anchoring of the flow of prosperity in the 4 body system. Participating in a properly guided and directed Lammas rite is a magical and very special moment, which opens the doors to a great spiritual and ascension awakening.
