Hollywood’s Next Fucking Women You Need To Know

Hillary Swank has spoken, Maggie Gyllenhaal has spoken, Patricia Arquette, in her beautiful speech at this year’s OSCAR ceremony, has spoken. Hollywood is still sexist. Machismo, as we’ve also said many times here at MdeMulher, is revealed in many ways. Here we are going to focus specifically on some numbers and a few facts that reveal a lot when it comes to the way the most powerful entertainment industry in the world – the one that inspires girls in every country – treats women.

In a list released by Forbes magazine of the highest salaries in American show business in 2013, actor Robert Downey Jr appears at the top, with a salary of 75 million dollars. The highest placed woman on the list that year was Angelina Jolie, in 10th position, with a salary of 33 million, less than half of what Downey Jr received that year.

Angeline Jolie nine places below Robert Downey Jr.? Doesn’t it seem strange to you that the most famous actress in the world earns so much less than an actor who, not even remotely, has the same influence as her? In the 2014 ranking, according to the Hollywood Reporter magazine, the situation of women has changed a little, but the vast majority of the highest paid are still men.

According to the magazine, last year, the actor who received the best salary in American cinema was Leonardo di Caprio, followed by Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Denzel Washington. Of course, we are talking about sky-high salaries, those that no one outside the select group of American entertainment dreams of ever earning. But the question here is: if this financial disadvantage occurs to women who have so much power, what about the other 99.99999% that make up the rest of humanity?

When it comes to Hollywood, the numbers, however, are not revealing only in terms of money. According to research released by the New York Film Academy in 2013, women had only 30% of the speaking roles in the 500 most watched films between the years 2007 and 2012. When it comes to partial nudity, 26% of them are exposed, while the number among them is 9%.

If we gather the 10 men and women with the highest salaries in 2013, they add up to US$ 465 million while they reach US$ 181 million. In the entire history of the Oscars, only four women have competed for the award for best director – and only one, Kathryn Bigelow, won.

It is also true that more and more people have been speaking out against this situation, as is the case with the three I mention at the beginning of the text and many others that are not mentioned here. Last year, photographer Clairborne Swansson Frank launched the book Young Hollywood, by Assouline publishing house.

In a beautiful, impeccable and inspiring essay, she honored the women of Hollywood, bringing together names that are on the rise in the film industry, whether in front of or behind the camera. Meet some of the next powerful ones we’re still going to talk a lot about.
