Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary: ​​Reach graces by praying to the saint

Did you know that today (7) is celebrated Our Lady of Rosario? The date was chosen for the celebrations because, on that same day, in 1571, the Battle of Lepanto took place, when the fleet of ships of the Holy League won the Ottoman Empire, off Lepanto, Greece. On that occasion, in the midst of combat, the Christians recited the rosary and achieved victory through the intercession of the saint.

However, the origin of the rosary (word that means “crown of roses”) comes from the 9th century, in Ireland. While the monks of the time prayed the 150 psalms of David, most of the faithful, who could not read, could not accompany them. So they began to pray the Our Father and the Hail Mary instead, prayers that are better known and easier to proclaim. The complete rosary, made up of three thirds, includes 150 prayers in total.

At first, the devotees of Nossa Senhora do Rosário made small knots in a string, so as not to lose count. Hence the current format, with large beads for each Our Father and small beads for each Hail Mary. In the interval of each ten Hail Marys, a reflection should also be made on episodes that marked the life of Christ: the Mysteries, divided into Joyful (birth and childhood), the Sorrowful (passion and death), the Glorious (resurrection and ascension ) and the Luminous (public life).

How to pray the rosary

The rosary can also be made with just one rosary, just say it three times in a row. Check out!

• Start with the Sign of the Cross, in the intention of the Holy Trinity;
• Then make your requests and pray the Creed;
• Before moving on to the Mysteries, say one Our Father, three Hail Marys, one Glory be to the Father and another Our Father;
• Make a reflection on each Mystery, followed by ten Hail Marys, an Our Father and a Glory Be;
• At the end of each rosary, say the prayer Hail Rainha.
