15 Mermaids that stood out for their appearances in movies, series and artworks

Mermaids are among the oldest figures in existence, as they were already mentioned in classical antiquity as hybrid beings. Descriptions of their appearance have varied throughout history, but the best known is the one that characterizes them as beings with the head and torso of a woman and the tail of a fish and a voice that enchanted lost navigators. O awesome.club made a compilation of famous mermaids from film, art and television that are part of popular culture. He also added two bonus aquatic mythological beings that are related to mermaids and whose appearance completely enchanted fans of their respective series and movies.

1. Ariel, from animation The Little Mermaid

In 1989, Disney adapted Hans Christian Andersen’s short story into an animated children’s film called The Little Mermaid. The story centers on Ariel, a young fish-girl who collects objects from humans while dreaming of discovering the surface world. Her yearning increases even more when she falls madly in love with Prince Eric, which leads her to make a deal with the evil Ursula and to give him her voice, in exchange for a pair of legs that allow her to be by her love’s side.

The mermaids from the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie are an essential part of the plot. In this production, they adopt the classic figure of women with fish tails. But upon contacting the earth, their tails turn into legs. Jack Sparrow and other pirates must fight these creatures to prevent them from sinking them into the depths of the sea. During the attack, one is captured so that her tears can be extracted so they can be drunk from the goblet of the fountain of youth.

There, she is found by two friends who are about to separate, who, upon learning that Aquamarine would grant their wish if they helped her, decide to do so.

6. Madison, from the movie Splash — A Mermaid in My Life

Another good movie that tells the story of a mermaid is Splash.🇧🇷 which premiered in 1984. In it, we see a young man named Allen Bauer, who as a boy met a little mermaid. Years later they meet again and, on this occasion, she rescues him from the sea. This is how this creature emerges to the surface and transforms its tail into legs, in order to be able to pass for a human, mastering Allen’s language quickly, watching television and adopting the name Madison.

Barbie is one of the most multifaceted dolls out there, so it’s no wonder she also had her mermaid version. To promote the toy line, the doll starred in several films on this theme, such as Barbie — Mermaid of Pearls, Barbie in a Mermaid’s Life, Barbie and the Mystery of the Magic Mermaid and Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia.

Usually, mermaid movies and series have a similar format. But Siren differs by having a more dramatic tone in relation to the theme. The production tells the story of a mysterious young mermaid named Ryn, who came to the surface to look for her human-captured sister, wreaking havoc on a coastal town. Siren was launched in 2018 and is currently on show on Globoplay.

10. The mermaids of the series tidelands

Another good series related to mermaids is Tidelands.🇧🇷 that mixes fantasy and suspense. The plot follows a young woman named Calliope “Cal” McTeer, who comes into contact with a strange cult led by Adrielle, and whose members are known as “Tidelands”, beings that emerged from the mixture of humans and mermaids. The series is available on Netflix.

11. Shirahoshi, from the animated series one piece

In the fifteenth season of One Piece, a mermaid princess named Shirahoshi appears, who has the classic shape of a beautiful woman with a fish tail, but who stands out for her large size, compared to the characters in the series. Shirahoshi lived trapped in her castle for 10 years and her dream is to see the outside world, which is why the protagonist decides to protect her. You can watch it here.

For fans of manga and these creatures there is a beautiful series called Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch, which is about a group of mermaids who live with humans. Throughout the series, they must fight water demons to ensure peace in the seven seas. To achieve their intent, they use their magical voices to attack enemies.

13. Ellen Price, dancer who played the “Little Mermaid”

Ellen Price was a Danish ballerina from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who played various characters from popular tales in dance and theater shows, among them, Cinderella the Sylph and The Little Mermaid, the latter being the one that gave him the greatest success throughout his career. Later, they used her figure to sculpt a bronze statue known as The Little Mermaid, a symbol of the city of Copenhagen, Denmark.

14. Mermaid sculptures in Warsaw

In Warsaw there are several replicas of mermaids due to a legend that was passed down orally in an old fishing village in Poland. It is about a traveling mermaid, who would stop at beautiful white sand beaches to rest. One day, a merchant captured her to display her at fairs, but a young fisherman took pity on her and rescued her. Grateful, the mermaid swore to defend the village and ensure its happiness. 15. Sculptures The Sirens of Segovia

Usually, mermaids look like a woman with a fish tail. However, The Mermaids of Segovia stand out from the others because they are similar to those from Greek mythology: they were sculpted with a woman’s head, a lion’s body and paws. Its author was Francisco Bellver, who in 1852 made the two replicas for the square of Medina del Campo, in the Spanish city of Segovia.

Bonus 1: Mermando, series merman Gravity Falls: A Summer of Mysteries

In an episode of Gravity Falls: A Summer of Mysteries🇧🇷 A merman named Mermando appears, who is trapped in a public swimming pool without being able to return to his home, because he cannot breathe out of the water. Mabel falls in love with him and decides to help him, even if it means ending their brief relationship. Mermando has the appearance of a boy with long hair and a fish tail, just like mermaids.
