Why is August 29 National Lesbian Visibility Day?

The National Day of Lesbian Visibility in Brazil is in August 29th🇧🇷 The date was chosen because of the 1st National Lesbian Seminar (SENALE), which took place in 1996.

Organized by Coletivo de Lésbicas do Rio de Janeiro (COLERJ), a group that existed at the time, it used the theme of “Visibility, Health and Organization” to talk about sexuality, prevention of STIs and HIV/AIDS, work and citizenship.

Because of the important milestone in the history of lesbian women’s rights advances, this was the day chosen to represent the importance of combating lesbophobia.

Every year entities such as Brazilian Lesbian Articulation (GLA), ABGLT🇧🇷 Brazilian Lesbian League🇧🇷 Afro LGBT Network🇧🇷 National Collective of Autonomous Black Lesbians (Candace BR), Shoe🇧🇷 Center for Gender and Sexuality at the State University of Bahiathe Sexuality Research Nucleus of the Federal University of Tocantins and the State Secretariat for Policies for Women, Racial Equality and Human Rights come together for an agenda of events, lectures, tables and workshops.

And it is always good to remember that the whole of August is called “Lesbian Visibility Month”, because it is also the day August 19th is named National Lesbian Pride Day.

On this day, in 1983, Rosely Roth articulated, together with other women, the LGBT community and even members of the OAB, a series of protests in front of “Ferro’s Bar” because they did not allow the distribution of one of the newsletters of the Grupo Ação Lésbica- Feminist, of which she was a part.

The São Paulo bar was a well-known hangout for lesbian women, even with reprisals from the owners. After lawsuits in court, the free sale of the bulletin was allowed.
