Why does Facebook celebrate Friend’s Day on February 4th?

For some years now, at the beginning of February, videos and posts commemorating Dia do Amigo, or Friend’s Day, in English, have started to appear on Facebook. But a quick search shows that nowhere in the world is this date celebrated at the beginning of February.

In Brazil, the Friend’s Day is on July 20th, as well as in neighboring Argentina, which takes this date very seriously – there people exchange gifts and go out to celebrate together, which is really cool, right? In Uruguay and Chile, friends also celebrate this day.

According to the United Nations Organizationwhich defines several official International Days, Friendship Day is July 30th – and they invite all UN member countries to celebrate this day, respecting their cultures and traditions.

Other countries choose to celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August, a good measure if the idea is to enjoy the whole day with friends – Sunday is perfect!

But why, then, on Facebook, do Friend’s Day videos begin to appear in early February? It turns out that Mark Zuckerberg, creator of the social network, thought that the Facebook creation day, February 4, it should be called Friend’s Day. And who can resist watching and sharing a video celebrating friendship, with photos and information that Facebook already has about each one of us?
