When two people dream the same thing: about shared dreams

What happens when two people dream the same thing? Is there any meaning to shared dreams? (see: Shared nightmares: when two people have the same nightmare)

First of all, we must clear up some generalities. It is not the same to have a dream shared with someone with whom we have a distant relationship than with our partner, for example, or a close family member (see: If two people have the same dream, is it still just a dream?)

Cases of shared dreams are, in fact, very common. When faced with someone who comments on the events of a dream that we have also experienced, it is advisable, before openly declaring that synchronicity, to ask the corresponding questions. For example, if two people dream about a third, it would be advisable to ask how he was dressed, where he came from, and all the circumstantial details that we can remember and then compare them with those of our own dream (see: My boyfriend and I dreamed the same dream )

But it is one thing to dream about the same people and events, and quite another to dream the same dream (see: Dreamwalking: when someone strange enters your dreams)

A reader recently wrote to me, regarding this new dream section, to ask me if it is possible to meet someone within the same dream. It would be bold to formulate a conclusive answer, but instead I dare to deepen that uncertainty (see: Can you enter another person’s dreams?)

Are there other people who dream our dreams without us knowing?

It is reasonable to classify shared dreams as a relatively common experience, as common as starting to whistle a melody that someone else is humming mentally at the same moment. Scientifically speaking, shared dreams are, at best, a coincidence; and, at best, a simultaneous approach to an issue that equally concerns two different people (see: Knowing if someone dreamed of you)

If we consider that dreams are, after all, facts of the unconscious mind; It is logical to conclude that these events can be reproduced in other people; although hardly identical. The Greeks, for example, considered that dreams formed a kind of alternative reality, and that the mind can access it according to the regulations and inhibitions of its own imagination.

A dispassionate look at archetypes indicates that we are all connected in unsuspected ways, through links that science is only beginning to methodically explore. After all, having two people dream the same thing is no less strange than guessing, or intuiting, what someone with whom we have a strong emotional bond thinks (see: Why do I always dream about the same person?)

Quantum physics proposes that all energy and matter in the universe are connected, so that what affects a tiny portion of the whole also affects the whole. Our minds, far from being outside of this connectivity, may be linked in ways that we cannot fully understand, and that for that very reason leave us with a feeling that varies between amazement and concern.

The interpretation of all dreams, even shared dreams, is divided into two central components. The first is the literal content, that is, what the dreamer literally expresses about her dream; and the second is the latent content, that is, the symbolism that is hidden behind the apparent.

To interpret a shared dream, many simultaneous factors must be taken into account. For example, suppose that two people, a couple or a married couple, dream during the same night that they are pregnant. When they wake up, they discuss the dream with each other and both agree that they have experienced exactly the same thing (see: Meaning of dreaming about pregnancy)

In this case, due to the link between both dreamers, the most accurate interpretation would be that both share the same conflict, that is, the possibility of pregnancy, and that the dream perhaps comes from a conversation held in the previous days.

It would be somewhat bold, not to say irresponsible, to develop random interpretations without knowing in advance the associations that give a dream its proper context. What we can do is propose an experiment, which is certainly not original at all, but whose results can be formidable.

It’s about intentionally having a shared dream.

The experiment should be done with a trusted person, preferably someone with whom we have a strong emotional connection. Both must choose a particular night and go to bed with the idea that they will share the same dream.

Some details that are worth taking into account for the experiment to be successful. Beforehand, one should not talk about the characteristics of the dream, that is, one should not attempt a dream encounter in a specific place, such as a beach or the terrace of a building. Only the attempt to realize a shared dream should be agreed upon.

Another issue that usually contributes to dream encounters is sleeping throughout the night, until well into the morning. If we must face some responsibility that day, it is better to leave the experiment for another night when we can sleep without being startled by the alarm clock.

It is also important to quickly take note of what we remember from the dream, including circumstantial details such as clothing, attitude, surroundings, and anything else that we can remember with relative certainty.

Many studies have been carried out on shared dreams and everything seems to indicate that they are much more common than people consider. There are few people accustomed to remembering their dreams, and even fewer who manage to direct the events that occur there. In any case, it is advisable to be alert when we dream about someone we know. In those cases, perhaps we are also the secondary protagonists of the other’s dream.
