What to do with the belongings of a loved one who has died?

Talking about the death of a loved one is not easy for anyone. As much as the person is spiritual, when nostalgia hits, there is always sadness and melancholy, mixed with a feeling of emptiness that nothing or no one fills. And this nostalgia is even stronger in the days leading up to All Souls’ Day.

It is very common, at this time, to dream about them. Dreams so real that, when we wake up, we often look for them in our daily lives, in our reality, until we remember that it was just a dream. We woke up from the dream and realized that the meeting with “them” was not on this plane, but in other spheres.

We will find out how much we miss them even today. We will miss your words, scolding, caresses, jokes, anger and jokes and, above all, your love. Whether it’s a mother’s or father’s love, whether it’s the love of a child or grandchild, or the love of a partner, these days this feeling will be stronger and more present. Each one will “enjoy” these memories, sensations and energies in their own way.

No one can blame you for how you look or feel on this day. We must respect the beliefs and feelings of others regarding All Souls’ Day and how they work or face the death of a loved and dear person.

And how does Feng Shui work with the “death or departure of loved ones”? In a respectful and simple way. Respectful, because each person faces death according to their personal beliefs and values and Feng Shui respects this personal vision.

And simply because in Feng Shui everything has a time to begin and to end. The cycle of life moves, and always renews itself. A simple and straightforward move.

In fact, Orientals have a simpler way of looking at death. Westerners, on the other hand, have a very different one. The Eastern tradition is easily understandable, when we understand that “praying” for the good energies, memories, joys, teachings, affection and love of our ancestors will guarantee and transmit good energies to their direct descendants and future generations.

In my professional day-to-day as a Feng Shui consultant, I am always asked about this topic: the death of loved ones, what to do with objects, photos and other questions.

As there are many doubts and they are always repeated, I selected the most common ones and I will try to clarify the myths and truths on the subject.

Most common questions:

1) Can we have photos of deceased people at home or at the company? They say it’s bad to have these photos in environments?

Yes, we can have photos of deceased people inside the environments, exposed or kept. There is no reason not to have photos of deceased people in the environments. In no way will these photos bring bad energy to the house and people. These photos can either be stored in albums or displayed in picture frames, in plain sight, without any problem.

2) Is it true that we can’t have photos of dead and alive people together exposed, because it’s bad luck?

Lie. Saying that it’s bad luck to be next to a dear person who has passed away is a tremendous lack of respect and sheer ignorance.

3) Why is it that every time I see a picture of my dead husband (or wife) I feel bad and cry? Could it be that the photo that has bad energies can cause this?

No, it’s certainly not the photo that gives you bad energy. What often happens is that we are very attached to the deceased and it is not easy to separate them and accept the fact. At first it’s normal. But if after a long time this continues, there is something wrong with you. Take care of yourself.

4) I like to light candles for my deceased ancestors and family members at home. Can this bring any harm?

Not recommended. Most religions do not advise this ritual. Now, if your religion, faith or belief allows this kind of ritual, if it’s common, of course you can. If it is not of your belief or religious habit, it should not light.

Spiritists and Umbanda practitioners, for example, do not like to light candles for deceased people at home, as they do not find the practice of this ritual appropriate within a residence or any other environment.

Many Catholics send Masses to their ancestors.

5) I have a habit of talking to my ancestors. Is this good or bad?

If you feel comfortable talking to them, no problem. But it’s talking and not crying or fighting.

6) I’ve been told that we shouldn’t remember or think about the dead people inside our houses, because it will bring bad energies. This is true?

I believe that the worst thing is to think about the living. It’s pure lie. We must, every day, have good memories of our ancestors.

What we can’t do is spend every day crying the death of someone dear. This is not good for us or for the spirit of the person who died.

7) Can we keep personal belongings of dead people inside the house?

Yes, we can and should keep personal belongings from dead people. Jewelry, pens, rings, watches, collectibles etc should be kept and used normally. Use what you can. Rest assured it will be very good.

8) What about clothes, shoes and utensils? Can we save?

For Feng Shui there is only one negative situation in having clothes and shoes: when they are idle and unused. In this case we have an environment with stagnant or stopped energy.

Now, if the clothes and shoes are used, great. In general, people donate most of their clothes, keeping only what they are going to use. Don’t keep your clothes sitting in closets and suitcases. Either use or donate.

9) After how long can we move things, clothes and personal objects that have died?

It’s not a rule, but I’ve seen many people wait seven or thirty days before the date of death, the so-called mourning period. Then they start moving these belongings. Either donate or use.

10) Can we renovate the whole house after a person has died?

After the mourning period it is important to start moving around the house. But don’t be in a hurry. Do it when you are willing and able to make the changes. Leave the house with your face and energy.

But, often to lift people’s “pike”, a painting or change of furniture helps a lot.

11) Many years ago I lost my parents or my son, and to feel them closer to me I keep their room closed, with all the furniture and objects from the time they were alive. I didn’t change anything. Is this good or bad?

This is lousy in every way and energy. Keeping a closed environment causes stagnation of energy for the house and its inhabitants.

Maintaining an equal and untouchable environment, as in the days when the residents were alive, is an unforgivable energetic delay. It hurts everyone, living and dead.

The worst thing is that there are people who keep the same house, with the same decoration for years in a row, after their partner died just to have memories of him.

12) What tip can Feng Shui give us?

Have good memories. Feel their energy. And live long, but very happy always.
