Understand why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created

You, your neighbor, the cashier at the supermarket where you shop… Everyone has heard of Human rights🇧🇷 Explaining – or even knowing – what they actually represent, however, can still cause some confusion.

Created on December 10, 1948, when the world was assimilating the unprecedented impacts and horrors of the Second World War, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (DUDH) is, in short, a document that aims to guarantee all fundamental rights and inherent to any person, regardless of race, gender, religion,political opinion, language or any other criterion that can be used as a segregating factor, since “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, as reinforced by the first of the 30 articles that make up the document.

Written by a committee chaired by Eleanor Rooseveltwife of the American president Franklin Roosevelt, the Declaration was signed by the leaders of the countries that, at the time, made up the United Nations. Together, they committed not only to preventing a second Holocaust or other atrocities, but also to ensuring, among other things, human dignity and freedom universally.

During these 71 years of its creation, the declaration was reproduced in more than 500 languages ​​and dialects, being the most translated document in the world. It also inspired countless mechanisms to protect these rights and influenced the elaboration of several Constitutions.

In 2018, to celebrate the seven decades of the publication of the UDHR, the UN released a series of explanatory texts on each of the articles that make up the document. They can be accessed here.
