The news that a player landed at the Rio Olympics pregnant was the subject of discussion among the participating athletes. The young woman in question is Diana Reys of the Puerto Rico volleyball team, who avoids talking about the subject, but claims that she informed the directors and the technical commission that she is cleared by the doctors to participate in training and games. Even so, she has not been cast in any matches to date.

The practice of sports during pregnancy is a controversial subject. But this period does not need to be seen as a hindrance to physical activity. “Women who are in the habit of doing a certain exercise can continue to practice it until the end of pregnancy, when authorized by the doctor”, says gynecologist and obstetrician Julio Bernardi, from Clínica Bernardi, in São Paulo. In any case, the mother-to-be must avoid maneuvers that could put the baby at risk. “In the case of the athlete, it would be prudent for her not to make sudden movements, such as rolls and the famous little fish. It is better for Diana to restrict herself to basic volleyball actions: serves, tackles, headlines and touches of the ball – they are harmless to the child”, concludes the doctor.
