He also has a strong relationship with the profession of the baker, as he was in the habit of distributing bread, wrapped in an apron that he carried close to his body, and coins to the poor, without the King’s consent.

History of Santa Isabel

Isabel was born in Spain in February 1271. She was the daughter of Pedro II, King of Aragon, who, at the time, was still a young prince. Without any concern for his daughter and her education, the monarch tasked her grandfather, James I, with raising her. As a man of great faith, the young girl grew up following in the footsteps of Christianity.

When she turned twelve, Isabel married Dom Dinis, a noble boy chosen by her father as heir to the throne of Portugal. She has always maintained a deep connection to the faith, being kind and helping those in need. In addition to being very intelligent and cultured for the people of the time.

She was a mother twice: to Constância, who would be queen of Castile, and to Afonso, heir to the throne of Portugal. Even with all the stories of betrayals involving her husband, Isabel never left him, being humble and following marriage in Christ. She even raised the extramarital children generated by Dinis.

During his life, he suffered several times with personal and family problems. Her daughter and son-in-law died early, having to take care of her grandson alone. Already with Afonso, she had to face the spiteful and angry personality.

It also had a strong presence in the internal disputes of the Portuguese and Spanish courts in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was the main voice among the powers for there to be just agreements, in a peaceful way. At the same time, he was busy improving the suffering of the poor and the pain of the sick, with the charity of his alms and his Christian piety.

At this time, various accounts of miracles created the legend of his holiness. One of the greatest examples is the episode of the roses, in which Isabel took bread to give to the most needy when she was surprised and asked what she was doing for her husband, who was not so pious. She replied that they were roses. Suspicious, he asked to see it, as it was not flower season. When she showed what she had in her dress, roses appeared instead of buns.

Dom Diniz, who made her suffer so much, ended up getting sick. Isabel then stayed by his side, helping until the monarch’s death in 1335. Then, the divine left her life of luxuries in the palace as queen and received the habit as a Franciscan. She spent the rest of her days in voluntary poverty, saying prayers and tending to the poor and sick.
