Pray the professional’s prayer for a good career

On this eve of Labor Day, thousands of workers around the world celebrate their day with a lot of party. As a professional, I send good energies to all professionals in all existing areas of activity. From the janitor to the owner of a company, may everyone in their importance in the global web of work be very happy and prosperous.

When Labor Day arrives, the first thing we have to be grateful for is having a job that earns us a salary. But, in addition to work, we have to remember that we have a profession. And this profession may or may not take off. In other words, we can grow in our profession or stay where we are.

For years I had and still have a profession. But I never bothered to expand it or grow into it. In other words, make a career and prosper. However, complaining that things weren’t going well, I knew how to do it very well. Until I started to notice that I was swimming in the same place.

I had a profession but I settled on the quiet level. So how could it grow if it was calm or almost stagnant? That’s when I decided to follow Max Gehringer’s advice when he reflects on the difference between a job and a career. What I lacked was to have a career that would drive me to grow and have more prosperity. See what Max Gehringer says:

“A job is a professional activity that generates resources to pay the bills that are due at the end of each month. A career is a series of decisions that a professional makes, throughout his professional life, so that the bills at the end of the month bother less and less. Employment is a present activity, career is preparation for the future. A job is always dependent on decisions that are made by the company. A career depends primarily on personal decisions. Jobs are temporary, careers are permanent.

But it is not necessary to keep changing companies to build a career. An entire career can be developed within a single company. Every job change that implies more responsibilities and better pay is a step forward in your career.

On the other hand, having worked in several companies but performing similar jobs in all of them is not a career. It is a sequence of linked jobs, which means that the next job will be very similar to the last job.

Someone who has been doing the same thing for 5 or 10 years, with no change in role and salary, has a job. Someone who is working in a company that does not require knowledge of English, but decides to study English on their own, is thinking about a career.

A career is continuous preparation for the next job, which will be better than the current one, and which may be inside or outside the current company. In general, those who think about a job change companies, but do not change their professional level. If you can’t build a career, look for a job. Whoever succeeds is wanted.

A job is what will allow this year’s Christmas to be a good one. A career is what will allow Christmas next year to be better, and each Christmas to be better than the last.”

Today I don’t have a profession. I have a career that is formed by several professions that lead me to success and prosperity. Is it easy to get? Not. But standing still won’t get you anywhere.

Professional’s prayer

My Lord and my God I come to you at this moment to thank you for my profession of (say your profession). I recognize that it was Your kindness and love that professionally enabled me to support myself and prosper my family life.

I ask You, Lord, for skill, wisdom for professional growth, help me to overcome my limits and my inner and outer difficulties.

I also come to ask for a heart full of faith and courage to overcome the obstacles that may come my way, so that I can be successful in all my paths – professional, sentimental and family.

Thank you, my God, for my profession, because through it I can be happy and make others happy.

In the name of Jesus, my only Lord and Savior,
