i love you but i let you go

I held you as tight as I could, until my hands bled and my heart burned. “Don’t go,” I begged. “Do not do it, please.” Tears flowed, my lips dried out. I looked into his eyes, expecting to find him behind that cold, empty immensity. I hugged you so tightly that time stopped and then I let you go.

Letting go is also love—love for the one who chose to leave and especially love for yourself.

The truth is that I love you. I love you enough to let you go. Because nothing in this life is as precious as our freedom of choice. And I got so tired of you never choosing me… but I love you and I let you make your own choices and find your own happiness. If someone made you believe otherwise, if you ignored yourself for a long time, if you forgot, then go, find the love you are looking for so much.

I spent our entire relationship figuring out how to make you love me. When I finally did—or so it seemed I did— I found there was no room for me in a room just the two of us. I cringed to be accepted in his perspective. I made myself small to fit in your frame. But what I didn’t know was how much it wouldn’t matter. Everything that consumes blinds you to the happiness you are looking for. And that’s okay, I’ll let you go. It’s time to find a frame that also fits me.

Why do you chase a love that never sees you? Look for a love that doesn’t run away; who will always choose you. A love worthy of you will never ask you to stop loving yourself. This love will complement your glow. And on bad days, the love you deserve will follow you bravely into every dark corner, hold your hand when you’re weak and show you the way when you lose your sight.

My heart is too special to be given to a person who knows nothing about it. I deserve to be seen, heard and received with love—that’s why I let you go.
