How to wear a suit: classic, modern and feminine looks

Brought and inspired by the men’s wardrobe, suits are already considered classic pieces in women’s closets. Suit is the name given to the set consisting of a blazer with pants, creating a serious and elegant look often adopted for formal occasions and as attire for work. In addition, the use of the blazer combined with other pieces has the power to update the look and give an extra touch of elegance to the look.

“Suit is a classic and so are its derivatives! Depending on the fabric, the cut, the combination, you can go from lunch with friends to a wedding. The cool thing is that by having a blazer, which serves as a third piece, the suit automatically refines the look. The band that the blazer forms on the front ends up slimming the silhouette and also gives it a linearity that transmits strength and objectivity”, says image consultant Veruska Olivieri.

Reinforcing the versatility of the pieces, it is clear that, among the famous, suits and blazers are a constant presence both on the red carpet of major events and in everyday life. Angelina Jolie, Emma Stone, Michelle Obama and Kim Kardashian are fans of the look. Here in Brazil, actress Mariana Rios and bloggers Lu Ferreira and Niina Secrets are also fans of the look.

In addition to being a joker on different occasions, the suit looks good on all body types. “Blazer models with belts or sashes value the thin waist. A blazer with a long, narrow lapel is good for those with a large bust. The ideal suit to wear wide hips is composed of a blazer at the hip with large lapels, complemented with straight or flared pants”, advises Fê Bastos, image consultant.

How to wear outfits with a suit

Here are tips and photos for you to be inspired by the looks of bloggers and create incredible combinations with the pieces you have at home:

blazer + pants

The classic blazer and pants set is a powerful weapon to create either a serious, elegant or conservative image or a casual, modern or sexy image – it all depends on how you will complement the look.

If you want to wear the suit at work, giving a more traditional and serious image, just combine it with a more sober shirt. Just by changing the shirt fabric that will complete the look, it is possible to adapt it to different environments: while the cotton shirt is the most traditional, noble fabrics, such as silk, chiffon and lace, help to create a more sophisticated look.

To take the suit to parties, the tip of the image consultant Fê Bastos is to bet on fabrics with texture, shine and prints. “Accessories must also be powerful: high shoes, sophisticated jewelry, elaborate makeup and hairstyle. Underneath, a silk shirt, lace top or nothing but a blazer, in which case the image will be extremely sexy”, comments Fê Bastos.

In more informal situations, the pantsuit can still be a good choice. Combined with a t-shirt, the look is relaxed and modern. “To relax even more, wear it with sneakers. The mix of tailoring with sports items is on the rise”, suggests the consultant.

blazer + skirt

The blazer and skirt set is as classic as the combination with pants and is also adaptable for quite different occasions. A selection of flat shoes and relaxed accessories can make a pencil skirt outfit casual. Likewise, choosing sophisticated shoes and accessories can transform a more casual outfit into formal situations.

Although it is a great option for hotter days, since it leaves the legs out, the set with the skirt does not need to be discarded in low temperatures: it just needs to be combined with pantyhose.

In addition to warming up, pantyhose can have the function of adding more seriousness to the look, making them a good choice for more formal occasions. At the same time, the use of colored or textured tights can break the sobriety of the ensemble and create a more modern image.

“For more serious and sophisticated looks, just choose nobler fabrics, coordinate with less color contrast or neutral and even monochromatic tones. Also, straighter lines give more strength; more rounded lines (on the collar, on the base) give it a more delicate look”, recalls image consultant Veruska Olivieri.

colored suit

If neutral tones are associated with a serious image, colorful sets are great options for a more relaxed or modern look; without, however, losing elegance. Betting on colorful suits is a great alternative to escape the obvious, especially for those who wear this type of garment frequently on a daily basis.

To create a more serious look with the colorful set, bet on monochromatic looks or combine it with accessories and a shirt in neutral tones. “It’s good to remember that the more color contrast, or mix of fabric textures between the pieces, the greater the relaxation”, comments Veruska.

The choice of colors can also influence the feeling of relaxation. Who does not want to give up the more traditional or discreet image, can bet on sets in lighter colors and pastel tones. Those who want a more relaxed or flashy look can opt for bold colors and patterned pieces. “The printed suit is casual and modern. This outfit should be used on more informal occasions”, suggests Fê Bastos.

Blazer: the darling to update any look

Using only the blazer in productions is a great alternative to update the look. The addition of the blazer as a third piece helps to create a more sophisticated, modern and elegant image, making all the difference in the look.

When it comes to combining the pieces, you can bet on the blazer without fear on any occasion. “Blazer can be worn with everything! There aren’t many rules and it’s not good that this happens: the blazer coordinates with vaporous skirts, shorts, jeans…”, guarantees Veruska Olivieri.

Abuse the mix of fabrics, textures and colors in the pieces to compose modern and relaxed looks. In order not to make mistakes when choosing accessories, Fê Bastos’ tip is to analyze the final result in the mirror: “Is the look more sporty? Use simple and understated accessories. Got more feminine? Wear delicate earrings and necklaces, but rich in details. Did it get more dramatic? Take the opportunity to use your most powerful jewelry”, comments the consultant.
