Gone are the days when you had to straighten your hair to feel beautiful and accepted. There is a growing movement of women who choose to break the pattern and stop straightening the wires to put the volume of curls, curls and waves in evidence.
It’s important to understand that you are free to wear your hair as you see fit, and that includes straightening it if that’s your choice. But, if what you want is to have your natural hair back, we will give you all the necessary tips to go through the hair transition.
What is hair transition?
The professional Mayara Ferreira Costa do Cabelaria, a salon specializing in wavy, curly and curly hair, explains that the hair transition is the period in which the person stops doing transforming chemicals in the hair, such as progressive and definitive brushes. The goal is to let the strands grow in their natural form, without relaxing and straightening.
How long does the hair transition last?
Mayara also clarifies that the transition time varies in each case, “generally we have two options: the person can grow the hair and cut it until reaching an ideal length or do the Big Chop”. This way, the transition can take a few months and for some it takes years, depending on how long you let your natural hair grow until you cut the straightened part.
Hair transition: schedule
The hair schedule is a hair care schedule. It goes through three phases: hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. Learn how each phase works and learn how to make the schedule:
- Hydration: it serves to replenish the water in the thread, which ensures that the hair is softer and more manageable. The ideal components for this step are those with plant extracts, such as fruits, aloe, panthenol and vitamins. It can be done twice a week.
- Nutrition: to recover dull and dry hair, hair nutrition takes care of replacing the oil and lipids in the hair from the root to the ends. Nutritive products are those that contain butter, pure vegetable oils such as coconut or argan, and marrow. The frequency of application is once a week, too much can make the hair heavy and oily.
- Reconstruction: brings strength to the hair from the replacement of hair mass and keratin. The components that work in the reconstruction of the threads are keratin, cysteine, creatine, collagen, arginine, proteins and amino acids. In the most damaged hair, it is indicated up to two reconstructions per month. When done in excess, it leaves strands opaque and stiff, which can cause breakage.

- Second week: nutrition, hydration and nutrition
- Third week: hydration, nutrition and reconstruction
- Fourth week: hydration, nutrition and hydration
Because of the chemistry, during the transition the hair becomes very fragile. It is important to replenish all nutrients so that your natural hair grows strong and healthy.
Big Chop
The term Big Chop comes from the English language and in Portuguese it means “big cut”. It’s the haircut that removes all the chemically treated part of the locks, it’s what marks the end of the hair transition and that’s why it’s so important.
Cutting your hair can be a delicate moment, especially for those who are in the process of accepting and recognizing their natural hair. So don’t be in a hurry! Make the Big Chop when you’re feeling ready and safe, it’s up to you.
