Good for the dog: pet blocks invade the street carnival

If you think that carnival blocks are not for dogs, it’s time to review your concepts. With a few barks and several costumes, pet owners have created a perfect way to enjoy the fun with their best friends and even help other animals. the idea of block – which has different names – is very similar to that of a parcão (lawns or closed spaces where dogs can play freely), only a little more incremented. Add music (volume controlled), costumes, donations and voila, your pack is ready for Mardi Gras.

Since the English bulldog Pandora was a puppy, Rômulo Menezes, her tutor, has attended pet meetings. In 2017, in one of the several groups of domestic animals on the internet, the pharmacist saw the advertisement for a special pad for the animals and decided to take his puppy. “After I took it once, I never stopped. Pandora is euphoric. She runs, wants to play among the dogs”, says Rômulo. Experienced, he prepares a backpack to enjoy the event. “I always take a bag for hygiene, water and cold fruit. Each pet is unique and the person needs to know their pet to know if it likes it”, he explains.

Organizer of the Cãobada block, which collects donations for the NGO homeless animals, in Curitiba, businesswoman Thaísa Salles guarantees that the events have gained strength by creating a space for interaction for animals and also for humans. “The purpose is mainly to fraternize. I realized that those who have a dog talk. The dog is a link friendship for people. In 2017, the event started small, there were 30 people and about 12 puppies. Now, at the event last Sunday (09), there were 170 people and more than 70 dogs”, says Salles.

In addition to the size, the blocks gained several attractions. The costume contest is a classic, but some of these events also feature free snacks, animal behavior professionals – to pass on tips to tutors – and even pet massage. The businesswoman explains that everything is designed for the well-being of the animals. “The music needs to be at a pleasant level, without fireworks and other aggressive noises so as not to scare the animals. We also provide hygiene bags and water at will”, she completes.

Although it lasts a few hours, the preparation for the blocks starts much earlier. Engaged, some tutors plan their costumes in advance and, for that, they rely on the help of stylists who are specialized in clothing for pets. After being unemployed for 4 years, Solange Silva Melo started making pet clothes for donation in an animal rescue project in which she was a volunteer. That’s when she saw an opportunity to undertake. She started producing more pieces and selling them to order. “I take all the necessary measurements: neck, belly circumference, height. Then I select the fabric that is most comfortable for the animal and produce it”, said Solange. With items starting at R$80.00, the stylist makes costumes, suits, wedding dresses, pajamas, headbands and even dungarees.

But veterinarian Mariana Piva, who was invited to be a judge in a costume contest alongside her dog Samsão, warns of some important precautions: “It is essential to think about applying sunscreen to the muzzle, a place with little hair. You also can’t forget to bring water and something for the pet to eat, like a snack. It is also worth testing the heat of the asphalt with the back of your hand to ensure that they withstand the temperature”.

For the specialist, the most important guideline is to respect the individuality and limits of each dog. “If he is showing fear, with his tail between his legs and his ear down, he is feeling uncomfortable and you should leave the block”, explains Piva. Now, if the pet is fine, wear comfortable clothes and party with your best friend.
