Discover the Secret Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas was already known in Greek, before it was discovered in 1945 in Upper Egypt and cataloged as one of the Nag Hammadi Texts (Dead Sea Scrolls). It has a different format from the Gospels that are in the Bible and refers to the secret words of Jesus, called “Living”, which he would have spoken to Thomas the Twin.

Because it is apocryphal, that is, it was not recognized as a teaching of Jesus Christ, it makes it a reference to Gnostic studies. There are no GM biographical data; but its main feature concerns the sequence of 114 sayings of Jesus. I transcribe the main sentences, starting with one of the most enigmatic sayings.

1) He said: Whoever discovers the inner meaning of these teachings will not taste death.

6) His disciples asked him, saying, Do you want us to fast? How should we pray? Should we give alms? What diet should we observe?

Jesus said: Do not lie and do not do what you hate, for all things are revealed to the eyes of heaven. For there is nothing hidden that will not become manifest, and nothing hidden that will not be revealed.

14) (…) What goes into your mouth will not defile you, but what comes out of your mouth – that is what will defile you.

15) When ye see him that was not born of a woman, fall on your face and worship him: he is your Father.

29) It would be a wonder if the flesh had arisen because of the spirit. But it would be the greatest of wonders if the spirit had arisen because of the body. I am really surprised by how this great wealth has taken up residence in this poverty.

35) It is not possible for anyone to enter a strong man’s house and take it by force, unless he binds his hands; then he will be able to loot your house.

37) His disciples said: When will You reveal Yourself to us and when will we see You?

Jesus said: When you undress without being ashamed and take your garments and put them on your feet and trample them like little children, then (you will see) the son of him who lives and you will not be afraid.

48) If the two make peace in this house, they will say to the mountain, “Move!” and she will move.

50) If you are asked: “Where do you come from”? Answer: We come from the light, from the place where light was born of itself, established itself and became manifest through its images. If they ask you: Are you this? Say: We are your children and we are the elect of the living Father. If they ask you, “What is the sign of your Father in you?”, say to them: It is movement and rest.

77) I am the light that is over them all. I am the whole. From me came the All and from me the All extended. Split a piece of wood, and I’m there. Lift up the stone and you will find me there.

113) His disciples said to him: When will the Kingdom come? Jesus said: He will not come because he is expected. It is not a matter of saying, “behold, he is here” or “behold, he is there.” In fact, the Father’s Kingdom is spread over the earth and men do not see it.

114) Simon Peter said to them: Let Mary leave our midst, for women are not worthy of life. Jesus said: I myself will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit like you males. Because every woman who becomes male will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
