If you love the pool, but think a whole swimming class would be too much for your breath (and mind – we know that some people find the modality boring), try Cross Swim, a workout that combines functional exercises with crawl sprints. “All sequences are interval, which allows you to increase the intensity and burn up to 350 calories in 45 minutes”, explains physical educator Cacá Ferreira, technical manager of the Cia Athlética gym.

Even those who don’t swim very well can take their chances in the water. Import analyst Fernanda Carvalho, 31 years old, for example, loves water aerobics, crossfit, circus and yoga but can’t handle the lanes. “Since the distances are short – a maximum of 25 meters – and I have time to rest, I manage to adapt the technique and still make a reasonable effort”, she says. It’s even worth swimming with a puppy or using a float belt to help.

Among the functional exercises are burpee, step jump, TRX and medicine ball, for example. The low number of repetitions (between eight and 15) is ideal for beginners or those just getting back to working out. The designer, Letícia Folini, had been out of work for five months and guarantees: “I spent two days feeling my thighs and still missed swimming, which I used to do as a teenager.”

Each block is four minutes long, with a minute and a half rest in between. “In the functional part, there are three exercises, each one for an area of ​​the body (legs, arms and belly)”, says Cacá. Depending on the training objective – which can vary between power, strength and endurance – the sequences change. In Rio de Janeiro, the novelty arrives at the Velox Fitness gym with some differences, such as the use of a climbing rope inside the pool and with a new challenge at each session.
