Careful Cupid

That day, a holiday, I went for a walk in a nice place. In the well-kept decor, there was a Cupid in pastel colors, cute. The classic and well-known representation: a figure of a one-year-old baby, learning to walk, naked, all chubby, with thick curly blond hair, imposing wings, looking at us with a rosy face, a red mouth and a mischievous twinkling of one of his blue eyes. , clear as the clear summer sky.

The friend who was with me, much younger, drew a sigh: “Oh, how beautiful”. “Beautiful?”, I pondered, weighing my age and the sum of everything I observed in my life, “Beautiful? Hmm… Gorgeous nothing! A danger. Look at that bow about to shoot an arrow. Worse, he sees the bag hanging off his back, plus half a dozen sharp ones.”

Incarnation of love, Cupid often plays a dual and ambiguous role. On the one hand, it is recognized (as my friend spontaneously and instinctively did) as beneficial – because of the happiness it bestows on couples, mortal or immortal. However, in other cases and situations (those that supported me in the observation above) he is considered cunning and malicious, especially in situations in which he acts, guided by his mother Venus, arousing unrequited passions.

My friend then, while sipping a coffee, understanding our dialogue that went beyond the merely casual, flowing into the philosophical and, further, into the spiritual, asked pointing with her right index finger at the figure on the wall: “How to protect yourself? These are really dangerous arrows.”

“Oh,” I commented, “Difficult. An arrow like that is how this coffee, bitter and sweet, generates a hard and pleasant reality at the same time. Balance the senses. It makes us feel things.”

“Yes”, completed my friend, “They are arrows that generate inescapable destinies… I can’t get tired of remembering the famous phrase that Elke Maravilha repeated: ‘Love is invincible in battles’”.

I finished my cup of coffee inspired by the wise and precious phrase that my friend remembered. Humans can win or lose, triumph or fall. Love, with its arrows of indomitable will, always wins – even if it causes destruction.
