Capillary thermal sealing promises restored and frizz-free wires

Sealing is another alternative in the midst of treatment options to restore hair health. Already well known and available in the vast majority of beauty salons in Brazil, the procedure’s main tools are keratin, hairdryer and board.

The function of the technique is to close the hair cuticles, which helps to reduce frizz, give more discipline and less volume and, in some cases, make the hair smoother. Although it can have this “smoothing” effect, sealing does not take formaldehyde and is not intended to smooth, but to hydrate and rebuild the wires.

For hairstylist and colorist Claus Pita, a major benefit of sealing is the restructuring of damaged strands. “The main composition of this treatment is keratin. In addition to rebuilding, sealing returns shine, softness and leaves hair healthy again”, points out the professional.

Due to its high potential to restructure strands, sealing is indicated, especially, for those who have chemically treated hair – highlights, bleaching, dyeing, straightening. Those who do not have chemistry in their hair but feel the need for a deeper treatment, whether due to dryness or elastic and rubbery appearance, can also find sealing a great alternative.

In this article, you will learn how the sealing is done and clarify doubts about the procedure. Check out!

How to do hair sealing

The sealing process is made up of steps and requires care when doing it, but it is not complicated. It all starts with washing with a deep cleansing shampoo, to open the hair cuticles. Then comes the application of the sealing product and the process of closing the cuticles, with the help of the heat of a dryer and/or flat iron.

The secret to getting the result right is to be careful to distribute the product well at the time of application and not forget any strand when you plan your hair.

Check out the most common step by step of how the technique is usually done in salons:

  1. Wash your hair with anti-residue shampoo;
  2. Remove excess water with a towel;
  3. Apply the sealant all over the hair;
  4. Finish drying your hair, with the help of a dryer;
  5. Pass the board through all the hair;
  6. Wash your hair, removing the product;
  7. Apply a thermal protector and finish by drying and ironing.

Due to the number of steps, sealing can be a little time consuming. “The procedure time depends a lot on the size and amount of hair the client has. On average, the session takes 1h30min”, explains Thay Sant’anna, hairstylist at Essencial Beauty & Hair.

Differentiating sealing from other techniques

The confusion of sealing with techniques such as progressive brushing or cauterization is common. However, they are different procedures that do not use the same products and have different purposes. Knowing each of the techniques is essential to choose the most suitable for you and also to make sure that the hairdresser will do exactly what you want.

The main difference between sealing and the progressive brush is in the purpose: while the sealing is a restructuring treatment, the progressive has no function to treat. The composition of the products used are also different; the sealing is made with keratin and the progressive takes formaldehyde, a substance that can dry and damage the wires. In addition, the progressive aims to smooth the hair, modifying the structure of the thread, which does not happen in sealing.

Cauterization, on the other hand, has in common with sealing the fact that it is a treatment to make the wires more beautiful and healthier. It is a technique with a purpose more similar to sealing and that also does not damage the wires. “Cauterization has the function of recovering the elasticity of the hair, acting from the cortex to the cuticles, inside the hair. That is, it is a deep hydration that seals the scales of the wires and softens the split ends, which allows to eliminate the frizzy aspect of the hair”, explains Thay.

The difference between the two techniques is that sealing leaves the hair looking smoother, while cauterization only serves to moisturize. The interval for redoing the procedure also varies in both: sealing lasts up to three months, while cauterization can be repeated after a month or less.

Cautions and Contraindications

Who can do sealing? “There is no special care before sealing. It is compatible with any chemistry”, comments Thay. Although it is more suitable for people who have already undergone chemical hair procedures, those who have virgin but worn hair can also benefit from the treatment.

However, it is not just the condition of the hair that must be taken into account before undergoing the technique. Those who have a scalp that is very sensitive to high temperatures, for example, should avoid sealing because of the use of heat to close the hair cuticles.

Possible allergic reactions to the substances used in the treatment should also be considered. “Remember that before doing any aesthetic and hair treatment, you should be aware of any allergies, irritations and rejections you suffer and, in case of doubt, be sure to consult a doctor or your trusted hairdresser”, says Claus .

In addition, Thay warns that the technique is contraindicated for pregnant women, who are breastfeeding and for children under ten years of age.

After sealing, the hairstylist indicates that the person continues using products of the same line as those used in the treatment. Those who have very damaged hair should also avoid, after sealing, going through new chemical procedures, such as straightening or dyeing.

frequently asked questions

Although it is increasingly popular, sealing still causes some doubts in those who are interested in the technique. Below you will find the main ones clarified by experts.

1. Does sealing damage the hair?

The fact of using dryer and iron as part of the process can make many believe that sealing damages the wires. But that’s not true. As Thays explains, “Sealing does not damage the hair. On the contrary, for those who like naturally straight hair, it is the best option. Because it treats while smoothing and returns nutrients and shine to the wires”.

2. Can pregnant women have a sealing?

Even if you don’t use formaldehyde, sealing is not the best option for pregnant women. “Because it is a procedure that is within the chemical chain, I do not recommend it. I suggest that the pregnant woman chooses to undergo hydration or cauterization”, advises Claus.

3. Who has curly hair can do sealing?

According to Claus, “although sealing is not a procedure to straighten the hair, its effects end up contributing to this happening, as the keratin closes the open cuticles, causing a reduction in volume and frizz”.

Therefore, those who have curly hair should first analyze what their goals are. Even without straightening it completely, sealing can make the curls looser and decrease the volume. If the desire is not to change the natural shape of the wires, it may be better to opt for other treatments.

4. How often can the technique be repeated?

Despite being a beneficial and healthy treatment, sealing cannot be repeated excessively. It is recommended by professionals that the technique be repeated in about three months. “You have to be careful with excesses, excess keratin can have the opposite effect, leaving hair thicker and unhealthy, after all, sealing is a type of chemical”, warns Claus.

5. What products can be used for sealing?

It is possible to find in the market special lines for sealing, with products necessary for each of the stages. In general, what you will need is an anti-residue or deep cleaning shampoo, liquid keratin, a powerful hydration mask and thermal protector. Additionally, you will need to use tools like a hairdryer and a flat iron – preferably one that can be used on damp hair.

Check out some products that can be used in the process or post-sealing:

If you want to treat and rebuild damaged hair, sealing can be a great option. Keratin returns nutrients to the hair, helps to reduce frizz and volume and gives hair more shine and softness. The smoother hair effect is also a feature of sealing, but it is worth emphasizing that this is not the main objective of the treatment.
