Why is Family Day celebrated on May 15?

O International Family Day It is celebrated every year on May 15th. This date was instituted in 1993 by the United Nations (UN) and came into effect the following year.

This celebration was created to reaffirm the importance of the family nucleus in the formation of individuals. Over the years, it also began to draw society’s attention to something very important: there are different types of family configurations and everyone deserves to be respected. The appreciation of bonds of affection is always present in the celebration of International Family Day.

The UN is also concerned with giving visibility to problems that affect society, emphasizing that the family is the basis of everything and that these guidelines must be treated from a human perspective.

In 2019, the theme of International Family Day is “Family and Climate Action: Focus on SDG 13”. SDG stands for Sustainable Development Goals (Goals for Sustainable Development). These are 17 goals launched by the UN to mobilize society around sustainable development. Number 13 concerns the fight against global warming.

Here in Brazil there is also the National Family Daywhich is celebrated on December 8.
