While your instinct may be to jump to the highest temperature when picking up the flat iron, this isn’t always necessary and it’s important to fight this urge. “All equipment that reaches very high temperatures can damage the hair cuticle (the external structure) and, in this way, make the hair more porous, often even brittle” warns Meire Gonzagadermatologist.
If you’re not sure which temperature setting to go for, you’re not alone. Depending on your hair type and goals, a lower setting may actually create the best, healthiest result for you.
THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE FOR EVERY HAIR TYPE
According to Meire, each hair curvature requires a different temperature and reinforces the importance of not exceeding it. “Never exceed this temperature, especially when using it at home because the chance of damaging the wire is very high, and of course, never forget to apply the thermal protector when using these types of devices”.
Very fine straight hair or delicate hair: 150 degrees Wavy and curly hair: 180 degrees Curly or thick hair: 190 or 200 degrees
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HAIR FOR THE FLAT HAIR
the dermatologist Natasha Crepaldi explains that “applying a thermal protector to the hair before using the flat iron helps to reduce by up to 50% the damage that could be caused by its use. Other tips are to use the flat iron only with dry hair”.
AND AFTER?
You may not think about it too much, but the first wash after using the flat iron is super important. “The ideal is that we make a hydration, to recover the hair cuticle“, says Meire.
