This Ugandan woman gave birth to 44 children and describes her life

Raising 1 or 2 children is not usually easy, especially for very young couples. And what do you think of raising 38 children? No, it’s not a joke. This 39-year-old woman from Uganda gave birth to 44 children. He lost 6, which makes her live with 38 children!

Her name is Mariam Nabatanzi and life has not been easy for her. When she was just 13, her parents sold her to a 27-year-old man. She got married, but didn’t even know what was going on until she was dumped at her husband’s house. A year later, she had her first babies, twins. The following year, triplets, and the next, quadruplets.

As a teenager, Mariam realized that marriage was a difficult path. “My husband had many children from previous relationships and I had to take care of them because their mothers were scattered everywhere. He was also violent and mistreated me every chance he got, even when I tried to make it clear that I didn’t like it,” Mariam said.

When Mariam already had 23 children, it was the moment when she decided she had had enough and asked the doctors if they could perform any procedure to avoid getting pregnant again. But after an extensive examination, the doctors said that she had a high platelet count, so any procedure could put her health and life at risk. Mariam gave birth to a total of 44 babies, 6 of which were twins, 4 sets of triplets, 3 sets of quadruplets and only 2 children were born “alone”. Another 6 died. Mariam said she has no regrets and that having children was a blessing from God.

The only thing that bothers her is that they are growing up without their father. Her husband often disappeared for months or even years, until one day he completely abandoned them. He never had any involvement in raising the children other than naming them, which was often done over the phone. The eldest son, who is 23 years old, says he hasn’t seen his father since he was 13.

But Mariam doesn’t have time to complain or feel sorry for herself. She has devoted her entire life to offering her children lots of love and care, giving them everything they need for the future. Food is one of the biggest expenses in this large family: every day 10 kilos of maize or maize flour, 7 kilos of beans and 4 kilos of sugar are needed.

All your children are getting education. One of the eldest twins studied nursing and the other became a skilled builder. “I hope my children can go to school because they all have big ambitions to be doctors, teachers and lawyers. I want them to achieve their dreams, something I couldn’t do,” said Mariam.

To cover her expenses, Mariam had to learn many different skills. She gathers local herbs to sell, bakes cakes, bricks houses, braids hair, organizes and decorates events, and even does hair for local women for weddings. “I know that these children are a gift from God, so I have to take care of them like they are a treasure and I do everything I can for them.”

Former BBC journalist Kassim Kayira heard about Mariam and visited her exceptional family. It is thanks to him that we now also know about her. Mariam has a message for all her cultured parents: “Stop selling your daughters to men too young to marry. They suffer a lot and the lack of parental love is something they can never fully recover from. 🇧🇷

“I will continue to fight to ensure that my children always have something to eat. I will never abandon them, even if we have difficult moments in the struggle for survival”, said this incomparable mother, in her interview with Kassim. She took the opportunity to give some advice to all men: “Don’t forget your responsibility, because marriage and the education of children is a joint responsibility”.
