What does an atom look like?

We all learned in school that the atom is the smallest particle of any element and that we are made up of molecules that are made up of atoms. But what does an atom look like? In reality, no one has ever managed to take a picture, at least not one that could show its details. Even the most powerful microscopes couldn’t do this because they have a resolution limited by the length of visible light, which is larger than the diameter of the atom.

However, not long ago physicists at Cornell University, in the USA, discovered what they called Electron Microscope Pixel Array Detector (EMPAD)a device that made it possible to see an atom with a record-breaking resolution of 0.39 Å.
