The smell of angels, demons, spirits and ghosts

The smell of angels, demons, spirits and ghosts.

Distinctive, unusual, out-of-place smells play a common role in almost all paranormal phenomena.

The ghosts and spirits of human beings, for example, emit an odor similar to that produced by smoke; weaker, in some cases, or really strong, if the issuer is an entity with considerable power of manifestation.

There are few cases of ghosts emitting a floral fragrance. One of the best-known examples is that of Dolley Madison, wife of the fourth president of the United States, James Madison, whose presence even today emits a strong smell of lilacs in Madison House, Washington.

Another famous spirit that cultivates the habit of emitting flower aromas is the Jasmine Lady; ghost of an unknown woman who was murdered by her husband at the Mineral Springs Hotel. Her presence is always preceded by the smell of jasmine, an essence that — it is said — was the one she used in life (see: The aroma of invisible jasmine)

Legend holds that this mysterious woman and her husband came to the hotel to enjoy its hot springs. During her stay, the woman met another guest, she fell madly in love and had a whirlwind romance with him. Since her husband was staying at the same hotel, the woman used jasmine perfume to inform her lover that they could see each other during the night.

The smells caused by ghosts are usually sudden and very brief. They appear and disappear almost instantly, and only occur in specific places.

Now, unpleasant odors are not uncommon in rather disastrous apparitions either. The non-human spirits of the astral plane give off a strong stench of putrefaction, in some cases, or of vegetables in a state of decomposition. The latter are generally related to poltergeist-type phenomena.

On the other hand, angels give off a very distinctive scent, particularly guardian angels.

Many believe that, like demons, angels use smell to transmit a message to humans. We are not talking here about messages that can be easily translated into words, but rather a message constructed by emotions that only the recipient is capable of identifying and interpreting.

Let’s remember that our brain examines aromas in the same area where intuitive thoughts and what we know as “feelings” are processed – the limbic system; So fragrances are a kind of trigger, both for emotions and memories, which can provoke in us a wide range of very specific sensations.

Researcher Doreen Virtue maintains in her work: How to connect with the archangels, that angels have a kind of code based on fragrances to communicate with us.

The aroma of flowers, especially roses, is the most used by angels of all hierarchies.

Aaron Leitch, in his book Angelic Language: History and Myths about the Language of Angels, explains that angels use the smell of roses because this flower has a higher energy and vibration than the others, which It becomes the primary vehicle of communication for beings who share that high vibration.

What does it mean to smell like roses?

Well, if we believe in angels we can follow Doreen Virtue’s explanation, this time expressed in the book: How to Listen to Your Guardian Angel, where she speculates that the smell of roses comes from our guardian angel, and that the meaning The message has to do with courage, in other words: encouragement to face a difficult situation.

However, the smell of angels has a wide range of interpretation even for the same individual.

Those who believe in this possibility maintain that the guardian angel can send fragrances that particularly remind us of a person, of a moment in our lives, pleasant or not; with the purpose that we examine it in relation to what is currently happening to us.

In most cases, the smell sent by angels reminds us of a particular person.

But there are aromas that, far from reminding us of someone, evoke special places in our memory: home, the sea, the mountains, even the aroma of certain trees, trigger all kinds of sensations in us. Those who really believe in angels explain that these types of messages can help us work on something unfinished in our lives.

Strangely enough, angels are also capable of emitting the smell of certain foods that trigger all kinds of memories in our brain. It is not the smell itself that is important in the message, but what it provokes in our memory.

John Dee, for example, who studied Enochian in depth: the language of angels, affirms that each fragrance emitted by angels has its own meaning for each one, although in fact they have traits in common:

Incense: spiritual enlightenment.
Roses: courage, courage, comfort.
Grapes: gratitude.
Mint: purity.
Cinnamon: peace.
Spruce: happiness.

Demons, on the other hand, are also great emitters of odors, in this case, clearly unpleasant ones.

In some demonological treatises, for example: Daemonolatriae and De Praestigiis Daemonum et Incantationibus ac Venificiis, it is argued that smell is the best way to identify the presence of a demon. Medieval exorcists were considered true hounds capable of following the trail of demons in a particular village by following their scent.

Another forbidden book, De Daemonialitate et Incubis et Succubis, conjectures that the Incubi and Succubi emit a kind of aphrodisiac vapor capable of awakening in us an uncontrolled passion. Once the sinful moment of fervor has passed, that same smell transforms into a fetid vapor of sweat.

From the démonomanie des sorciers and the famous Malleus Maleficarum, on the other hand, they clarify that even witches emit a diabolical smell of putrid, stagnant water, and in certain cases of excrement. It is not that this stench comes naturally from them, but that they use it to mask the smell of sulfur that remains impregnated in them during sabbats and covens.

The demons themselves, that is, the demonic presences, smell of sulfur. The stench is so strong that anyone who smells it feels as if the inside of their nostrils are burning.

To finish this odoriferous review of the afterlife, we will say that Michaël Ranft, author of one of the strangest cursed books of all time, the De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis; something like “the chewing of the dead in their graves”, he states that even vampires and the undead in general emit a singular stench, the trace of which permeates the places they frequent during the night.

This putrescent, overwhelming stench, the wise man clarifies, is usually confused with the smell of gases of rather intestinal origin; farts, in other words.
