How to attract a vampire

How to attract a vampire.

One of the most used ways to attract a vampire was to choose a boy or girl, young enough to be virgins, and sit them on a black horse, preferably chaste and that had never stumbled.

The horse was taken to the cemetery and made to pass over the graves suspected of housing an Undead. If the animal refused to walk over one of them, it was a clear sign that a vampire was buried there.

The children were then seated on the tombstone and then taken to a safe place. When night fell the vampire would invariably follow the scent trail left by the infants; and thus he would fall into a lethal trap.

This belief is well described in Ann Rice’s vampire novel, Interview With a Vampire.

Some folklorists maintain that tombstones were not originally intended to illustrate the past life of the deceased, but rather were a method of preventing vampires from rising from their graves.

There are other, perhaps more modern, methods to attract vampires; which consist of applying traditional rites in reverse to keep them away.

For example, just as vampires hate garlic, they love the scent of poppies. These flowers exert tremendous magnetism on vampires and lead them to commit all kinds of recklessness to obtain them.

In the myths of Eastern Europe we find very few traditional remedies to summon vampires, since in that area vampires are usually quite unpleasant and have a miserable existence. Voltaire used to mock them by saying that the belief in vampires is directly proportional to the ignorance of the people who profess their faith.

But in the enlightened culture of Voltaire’s Europe the germ of vampirism also stirred, which took on many forms. The legends gained in subtleties, in small contradictions and disorders that slowly increased the belief in vampires.

It began to be considered that vampires could enter a room only when the victim invited them, consciously or not.

Let’s look at some ways in which a vampire could show up in a lady’s bed:

The absence of religious objects was not necessary. Vampires do not fear any sacred symbols in the presence of frivolous people. They only hate them when crosses and reliquaries operate as catalysts in the hands of men of proven faith.

Roses, on the other hand, produce a strong rejection in vampires, especially white ones. It is also not advisable to have a container of water in the room, particularly near the bed, since vampires cannot cross any boundary marked with water; and this works, within the legend of course, both for rivers and for a simple glass of water.

It is important to note that once the vampire has been present, both the unknown lady and he are equally responsible for the well-being of the other.

We explain ourselves.

Just as the vampire needs an invitation to enter a house, he also requires permission to leave it. For this reason, vampires usually feed by visiting their lovers’ rooms but they never kill them within those limits; since without the victim’s authorization the vampire will not be able to leave the place.

Thus, the woman and the vampire must complement each other: he will read her deepest desires, even those of which she is not entirely aware, and he will satisfy all her appetites as he drinks her blood. She will offer him the chalice from her neck; She will dissolve between her hugs; but the pleasure will only be an anticipation, a prelude, it will never be fully consummated; and when the shadow of the vampire leaves the room our unknown lady will believe she has had a horrible dream, she will feel on her lips the echoes of a cold kiss, frozen as the grave; Her body will tremble, her fingers will remember the ethereal texture of a livid body that refuses to remain in memory.

No one who has been bitten by a vampire will fully remember the experience, much less the face of their sinister visitor. The night will be like a nightmare stirring in an inaccessible corner of the mind.

Did that happen?

Was it a dream? you might reasonably ask.

We can imagine this hypothetical woman struggling to fall asleep, her mind troubled by doubts and a horror that refuses to be evacuated by logic. Her room seems to close in on her, its walls shadowed and the curtains billowing gently in the night breeze.

And in the prelude to sleep, where consciousness makes its way towards the impossible, perhaps we will see her stretch out her trembling fingers to verify the lubricity of her sex shrouded in darkness; trying in vain to remember a moment that perhaps never took place. She will then see, on the white pallor of her sheets, a tiny purple pearl, the red jewel of her veins; and there will be no more uncertainty.
