The Personal Growth of 28 Years |

In the Biographical Work methodology, we divide life into periods of seven years, which we call Sethenians. This division has a didactic purpose, but it contains a wisdom already known to the ancient Greek philosophers, who first proposed this division. Each septenium passage is marked by events that take life in a different direction. Sometimes these events are external, true facts, but many times they are internal, changes in our perception of the world. Whether internal or external, these events provoke crises in our existence.

Around the age of 28, sometimes a little earlier or a little later, we experience the Talent Crisis. Until the age of 21, the beginning of adult life, we experience what we learn in our personal, loving and professional lives, often impulsively, guided more by feelings and sensations than by reason. Reaching the age of 28, we are developing more rational thinking, so each decision becomes much heavier and measured than just felt. Many people say that “the youth is over now” and seek more stable situations in life. For example, if you’ve changed jobs a lot, always following the proposals and possibilities of learning something new, now you’ll be looking to establish a more stable moment in your career, either through a job or even on your own. I’m not talking about regrets about the changes of early adulthood, as this multiplicity of experiences made you develop multiple talents.

questioning period

The Talent Crisis makes you think: “I went out into the world, into life, I lived through many situations, I learned a lot, I developed many talents but… what now? What do I do with my talents going forward? What talents do I want to work on to develop more and become a faculty in my life? What talents do I need to set aside, fully or at least partially, because they no longer serve me or interest me anymore?”

Many times the Talent Crisis appears as a questioning of their own capacities. In my life, it appeared between the ages of 28 and 29. I worked as a homeopath and pediatrician in a very small town near Nova Friburgo, and I was the only homeopath there. It had many clients, earned well, had a respected name, even though it was so young and formed just 5 years ago. I no longer needed to work shifts, I went out on weekends with my family, I traveled frequently. All the best! That’s when the itching started… I questioned whether I was really a good homeopathic doctor or if I was successful because I was the only one in town, like ‘in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king’. I decided to move to Freiburg and start working there, since it is a much bigger city and has many homeopathic doctors (proportionally to the population, it has more homeopaths than most capitals). Logically, I spent a few days at the old office, it wasn’t a jump without a safety net, but little by little I increased my hours at the Friburgo office and everything worked out. I had talent for stuff! From there, a new phase in my life began, with new possibilities (contact with Anthroposophy began there, at the age of 28, through a friend from Freiburg).

Necessary changes

This Talent Crisis is often triggered by someone, a friend or someone who passes through our lives, who says something and creates that itch. It could also be a book, a movie, but always leading to a deep questioning of what to do with the talents we’ve conquered so far.

Observe in your history, if you are past that age, what this Talent Crisis may have been. And, if you haven’t reached the age of 28 yet, keep your eyes and ears open to the questions that will arise at this stage. They will bring you a certain anguish, after all the word “crisis” is not rhetorical, but you will enter a new direction in your life, in a very rewarding personal growth.
