The Dutch artist who makes incredible works with mandalas

The mandala is a circular or wheel-shaped design that was born in India. Its purpose is to encourage meditation and relaxation in those who observe or create it. Nowadays, resorting to this art has become a great therapy. Its formats are infinite and you can incorporate all the desired geometric figures into a single design.

Today we are going to talk about an ingenious Dutch artist called Suzan Drummen, who decided to shape her ideas by filling the floors and walls with her mandalas, making it clear that the art of these circles can come out of paper. Suzan Drummen studied monumental painting and drawing from 1982 to 1987. To date, she has 68 exhibitions, the first of which was held in 1991. Her work began with her instinct to study contexts and places. After analyzing everything, amazing ideas popped into her mind which she executes in a very meticulous manner.

Suzan creates a connection between the works, from their form or the materials with which they are made, to their content or their relationships. Each work serves as an inspiration for the next. She believes it’s good to look to the past because that way, it’s possible to broaden the perspective of her art.

She wants her work to be noticed beyond the obvious because she believes that we often want to understand and find meaning in everything. The mental openness and importance of the first time something is observed are essential for her.

In her three-dimensional works she uses a very wide variety of materials, with the aim of transforming a space into something incredible for the eyes and that, in turn, her creations cannot be understood and seen only once, with the intention of seeing all.

In her head, Suzan always creates a movie of the events. First, she enters a space, then she realizes the scale of the work, and later, she moves away from the place. This happens before any work; in this way, she seeks to direct the physical and mental movement that her art will adopt.

Immersing yourself in Suzan’s art, you can perceive two forces. The first is about lostness within an intoxicating world, due to the effect of materials and rhythm that encourages her to merge into a celestial space.

The second is the one that focuses on perception. That way, you are aware of what is intoxicating you with art.

The use and reuse of repetitive themes, contrasts and shiny surfaces are a characteristic of his work. However, although some ideas return, it happens differently: whether in scales or materials, there is always a different perception.

The works originate from a large structure followed by smaller ones, certain prints, some modifications and other details. It’s as if his work were condensed matter.

Suzan’s art begins with her interest in the superficial, in the first impression, in sensitivity, in the light and shine that comes from something. These factors lead her to analyze the outside of things and make her want to transform these details, giving everything an extraordinary result.
