Stories of Our Lady Aparecida and Miracles Conceived

Did you know that there is more than one miraculous account related to the Patroness of Brazil? Today, in full Feast of Our Lady of Aparecida, learn about the stories of the saint and the miracles behind each of them! Probably the most famous is about her image appearing in a river.

It was October 1717 when, on the banks of the Paraíba do Sul River, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, fishermen João Alves, Felipe Pedroso and Domingos Garcia found an image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It is said that the fishing took place to prepare a special dish at a party in honor of the Count of Assumar (Dom Pedro de Almeida, ruler of the captaincy of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro, who passed through the city of Guaratinguetá).

The season was weak for fish. Even so, the fishermen cast the net. The first time, they collected the object of their image. Surprised, they made a second attempt and hooked the head. From that moment on, when they saved the pieces, fishing, hitherto non-existent, became plentiful. It was the first of many miracles attributed to the saint.

Conversion

A man was passing through Aparecida when he observed the faith of the pilgrims. As he did not believe in the power of Our Lady, he mocked the faithful. Thus, he decided to show that faith in the saint was nonsense by entering the church on horseback. However, when he went to do that, his animal’s paw got stuck in the stone of the stairs.
