Seitai, the culture of harmony and health

Seitai is movement, it is vital harmony and it is health. We are facing a body practice that has its roots in a type of traditional Japanese culture created at the time by the therapist Haruchika Noguchi. To speak of seitai is to refer above all to the art of spontaneous movement, that capable of regenerating us, of relieving tension, of giving us sensational vigor.

It is very possible that the term “Seitai” is something completely new to many of us. It is also possible that we tell ourselves that it should be some type of practice more similar to yoga, tai chi or even mindfulness. It is not going down this path, in fact, we are not facing a type of discipline where each movement is scheduled or where there are some types of basic strategies that seek a therapeutic goal.

Sentai is not a therapy or a meditation technique or a spiritual discipline. In reality, it is something better and perhaps more ambitious. Seitai is a type of culture that guides us towards a simpler type of existence, where we can trust life again with intensity and where we are also able to promote our physical and mental health.

“Let your body move spontaneously and it will balance itself. Trusting this innate intelligence is the key to Seitai culture.”

-Laura López Coto-

Seitai or the importance of healthy movement

Movement is life, we all know it. However, sometimes we get confused, Sometimes we practice other types of movements that what they really do is take away our health, inner balance and well-being. In “Alice through the mirror”, For example, we find a metaphor that perfectly defines our current society. When Alice arrives in the Red Queen’s country, she discovers that its inhabitants are forced to run to stay in the same place. If they want to get somewhere specific, they must run “faster.”

That’s what we do, We run faster every day because our world is increasingly demanding. However, this type of movement goes against our own body. Sometimes, even the mind goes faster than life and the body slower than our desires, because we become rusty, because tension and stress grip us, because pain and fatigue appear and we can’t handle much more…

We are conditioned by society, there is no doubt, and this is what Seitai reminds us. Hence proposes to launch another type of movement, a regenerative, vital and spontaneous movement where every piece of our being (the physical, the psychic and the energetic) regain their harmony.

Sentai Benefits

As we have indicated, Sentai is a type of culture. At the same time, Katsugen Undo is the basic practice that defines it and it invites us to something to which we are not so accustomed: to move freely and according to our needs.. What’s more, when someone enters a Katsugen Undo class for the first time, they will find a certain group of people moving as they please, doing free stretches, dancing with their eyes closed, lying on the floor or looking for that specific position that their mind want.

In this way, we can already get a slight idea of how cathartic this type of free, vital and regenerative exercises can be. Its benefits are notable:

They resolve and prevent back pain. This type of practice favors the correct alignment of the spine and its flexibility. We allay worries and tensions. Stress is reduced considerably and we manage to manage it much better in our daily lives. Our positive emotions awaken, we feel more encouraged, freer, more receptive and open to experience.Improves self-confidence. Improves our digestive health and strengthens the immune system.

Seitai, the practice of infinite movements

Seitai is the practice of infinite movements, where each of us can express ourselves in our own way, move as we wish like trapeze artists in the air enjoying our freedom. However, There is one aspect that we must consider: Katsugen Undo places special interest on our spine.

The movements are free, but they must maintain adequate harmony to take care of that spinal axis, which in turn must be accompanied by adequate deep breathing. Let’s look at some basic exercises:

Look up and stand on your tiptoes. Relax, breathe deeply. Move your shoulders forward for a few seconds and then return to the original position. Repeat this movement while walking in a relaxed manner. Turn your waist left and right, keeping your back straight. Accompany this movement with your arms so that the exercise is more harmonious.Move your abdomen, your pelvis, your belly, exercise this area by moving slowlywithout exerting tension, but favoring the flexibility, freedom, and dynamism of your body….

In conclusion, The most interesting thing about seitai is that it encourages us to remember that there is another type of culture, the one that goes at a different pace., that which moves according to our most basic needs. Assuming this approach costs nothing, nor would it cost us anything to carry out any of those exercises proposed by Katsugen Undo.

Listen to your body, trust it and find harmony with those movements that it dictates to you.
