Saint Expedito’s Day: pray for impossible causes!

April 19th is the day of Saint Expedito, for urgent and even impossible causes. It is said that he was martyred in Armenia, in the 2nd century, who was a military man and was beheaded on April 19, 303.

Expedito led a wanton life, but one day he was touched by the grace of God, when he saw a great light, and everything changed in his life. It was then that the evil spirit appeared to him, in the form of a crow, and said to him: “cras! cras! cras!, which means: tomorrow! tomorrow! tomorrow!, that is: ‘put it off for tomorrow! Take your time! Postpone your conversion!”

But Saint Expedito, trampling the crow, crushed it, shouting: “HODIE!”, which means: today! No delays! It’s for now!

That’s why Santo Expedito is invoked in cases that demand immediate solutions. In Brazil, above all, it is invoked for problems related to business.

Devotion to Saint Expeditus

There are no records of having formed a tradition about him in antiquity, but by the 8th century he was already being worshiped in Germany and Sicily.

His cult only became more widespread around the 17th century, perhaps from France or Germany, where he was represented as a lawyer stepping on a crow that screams “cras! cras!”, signifying the interminable delays in legal proceedings against which he was invoked.

In 1781, he was designated patron saint of Acireale, Sicily, and since then his devotion has spread rapidly to many countries. It is possible that his connection with urgent causes derives solely from the meaning of his name. Traditionally, too, he is the patron of merchants, navigators, students and those who will take exams.

In Brazil, his veneration took shape in the 1980s and today he has crowds of devotees, and his image circulates on key chains, posters, pamphlets and saints distributed by the thousands. In addition, he gave his name to the municipality of Santo Expedito, in São Paulo, and Santo Expedito do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul.

“My Holy Expeditious of just and urgent causes, help me in this hour of distress and despair, intercede for me with Our Lord Jesus Christ. You who are a holy warrior. You who are the saint of the afflicted. You who are the saint of the desperate. You who are the saint of urgent causes. Protect me, help me, give me strength, courage and serenity. Answer my request. (make the request). Help me to overcome these difficult times, protect save me from everyone who could harm me. Protect my family, answer my request urgently. Give me back peace and tranquility. I will be grateful for the rest of my life and I will name everyone who has faith. Saint Expeditus, pray for us. Amen.”
