Plants in decoration: create more beautiful and cozy environments

Using plants in decoration, whether at home or in the office, helps to make environments more beautiful, cozy and harmonious. The famous urban jungle, which went viral on social media, guarantees “contact with nature, a feeling of pause and detachment from our urban daily life and creates a refuge within the home itself”, says architect Denise Yui, from Selvvva, in São Paulo. Paul.

According to her, there are many species that adapt well to indoor environments and, with natural light, the plants match any room in the house, whether living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and even bathrooms!

But, before choosing, you need to pay attention to the light, temperature and humidity conditions of each room. “Try to prioritize the brightest areas and areas that are closer to the windows”, says the architect.

Another important point is to check the available space and see which is ideal for each species, in addition to knowing the care of the plants, which are also different for each type. The pro has some tips that can help.

Why is decorating with plants a good idea?

In addition to furniture and objects, having plants is interesting because they bring a little color, volume and joy to the environments, among other advantages.

They make the environment more cozy: “Any place is more cozy when there are plants. In decoration photos this is evident. When we see a photo of an environment full of green, more than ‘how beautiful’, comes to mind ‘how delicious!’”, he says.

They guarantee more tranquility: “Taking care of a plant means a break from the hectic daily life. The plant’s development takes place at its own pace, different from that of our daily lives. It brings enormous tranquility to connect with this rhythm”, he says.

According to the architect, plants are always good options, because they are alive and transform, generating unexpected shapes, unlike other objects in a house.

Best plants to grow at home

“Before choosing a plant for a specific corner, pay attention to whether it gets direct sun or not. If it’s sunny, it’s nice to know the time, because the closer to noon, the stronger the sun. There are plants that don’t like direct sun and others that need sun. Watering also varies by species. Choose plants suitable for your routine: how many times each person can water a week is also an important factor when choosing”, explains Denise.

Here are some options to have at home:

marantas

This species has some variations and, in addition to shades of green, they also mix shades of pink and purple. They should be grown in partial shade: exposing them to direct and intense sunlight causes the leaves to become discolored, curled and dry at the edges. During the day, they seek to receive as much light as possible with the leaves arranged horizontally, while at night the leaves are raised. For this movement, they received the nickname of praying plants.

“If the leaves do not go down in the morning, the plant may need to be in a brighter place”, says the professional. The soil should be kept moist, not soggy. Spraying the leaves with water on dry days is also recommended. In winter, watering can be more spaced.

anthurium

Traditionally used in pots inside houses, it does not require direct sunlight to develop and has very durable flowers. Its leaves are heart-shaped and its flowers can be of different colors, such as red, white, green, purple or pink. It grows well in a well-lit place, with only diffused light.

“If exposed to direct sunlight, its leaves burn, turning brown and dry”, explains Denise. On a daily basis, keep the soil moist and, on very dry days, spray water on the leaves, taking care not to leave the soil soggy, as the roots can rot.

boa constrictor

It is a tropical climate plant, used to living in the shade of other plants. For it to grow healthy, soil rich in organic matter combined with frequent irrigation, heat and good light is important. “It can be grown as a hanging plant or make it cling to a support to climb like a vine”, he says.

A tip from Denise to understand a plant is to think about how it is found in nature. “If it’s a desert plant, it normally doesn’t like humidity and likes a lot of sun. If the species proliferates under trees, it probably likes filtered light,” she says.

Ideas for arranging plants in decor

To decorate the house with plants, it is interesting to create different heights and volumes, mixing textures and colors. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes when combining: plant matches plant! Just remember to put together plants that like the same light conditions”, says the architect.

In floor

Large vases are the best alternatives and can have more sober or stronger colors, depending on the style of decoration of the room.

Supports and Pendants

If there is no space on the floor, hanging pots positioned over the furniture can be a good option.

In the shelf

Place them in the corners and edges of bookshelves, shelves and furniture. In these places, plants help to enhance the space. Prefer weeping plants like ferns, purple philodendrons, or boa constrictors.

On ladder

Use pots of small but prominent plants, such as bonsai and cacti, on each step of the stairs. Another option, if the stairs are very narrow, is to use pendants.

Remembering that it is important to pay attention to the material of the vase or cachepô, as materials such as clay and cement allow moisture to pass through. “When placing a plant on a furniture or wooden floor, be sure to insulate it from moisture. Metal cachepots are ideal for this situation”, indicates Denise.
