Having a chocolate chip at bedtime is not a good idea if you’re struggling to control your sweet tooth. According to research published in the American scientific journal Appetite, what is consumed at night affects blood sugar levels for up to 14 hours.
In practice
It means that, upon waking up, the blood glucose rate may be out of control, which makes you feel like eating cake even for breakfast.
“Boquinha” do bem
To break this vicious cycle, Vanderli Marchiori, a nutritionist from São Paulo, suggests choosing a snack with protein, fiber and a little fat (yogurt with chestnuts, for example) – that is, if you feel hungry before going to bed. “These are nutrients that have a slow absorption rate and are therefore able to keep sugar levels more stable.”
Best moment
She advises leaving the chocolate (70% cocoa!) for after lunch. “It is the best time for the craving for sweets to be controlled.”
