Foundation lifts a community in Madagascar out of poverty and wants to do the same in Argentina (we can all help)

Today, around the world, one in every 70 people faces problems related to food, poverty, lack of education and sustainability. The data are from the UN. Luckily, there are people willing to change that reality. Different organizations struggle daily to try to solve some problems, and the Akamasoa foundation, which means ‘Good Friends’, is one of them. She was born in Madagascar and shortly after started to work in Argentina as well. Its main objective is to give new hope to children who suffer from education problems and malnutrition.

O awesome.club wants to tell how this idea was born and what is the work that the team of this NGO does every day in the fight for a better world.

Meet the man who helped over 500,000 people find a home

Pedro Opeka is the Argentinian priest who created the aforementioned foundation. Its main objective is to give a better quality of life to those in need, thinking about 3 main pillars: housing, work and education🇧🇷 It all started in Madagascar 30 years ago with a dream. He has already helped more than 500,000 inhabitants of the country with the construction of around 4,000 houses where more than 25,000 people live. Furthermore, education on the island has grown so much that currently no less than 14,000 children are enrolled in schools.

What was once a dream for Pedro today is an infrastructure of 22 neighborhoods that make up the city of Akamasoa. With a lot of effort and commitment, he managed to create schools, shops, a medical center and 3 water reservoirs to supply the entire population.

How ‘Bons Amigos’ arrived in Argentina

together with the foundation More Humanity, Gastón Vigo Gasparotti, another man fighting to make the world a better place, began doing the same work in Argentina. With a degree in business administration and a writer, Gastón decided to travel to Madagascar to learn everything about the foundation from Pedro.

More than 33.6% of Argentines live in poverty and 50% of students do not even manage to finish high school, a situation that led Gastón to create a kind of branch of the akamasoa in Argentina, to change these statistics and contribute to the country’s social development. For this, he relied on the work of a team of 30 professionals and 200 volunteers.

Goals for 2019

In addition to combating extreme poverty in Argentina, the organization strives to create conditions for development in the country. Inspired by the so-called Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (SDGs), Akamasoa has created its own goals for 2019, such as:

Develop a hydroponic garden.

Build an industrial kitchen.

Enable a sewing workshop.

Build houses for volunteers and a training center.

Build two rooms so that students can finish their studies, in addition to a space for recreation.

How the NGO helps the community

The organization offers pediatric and nutrition services for children, carrying out an integrated nutrition diagnosis and offering lectures on eating habits and how to use natural resources in the right way. She also offers advice to mothers about childhood and the Montessori Method for the self-development of little ones. Social inclusion and human development are two other aspects that the foundation seeks to highlight in order to create a more humane and sustainable Argentina.

On the other hand, the NGO seeks to train professionals in different areas. The idea is to show how each inhabitant plays an important role in the formation of a fair society. Issues such as culture, sport, agriculture and psychological support are on the list of topics valued by the foundation.

“Akamasoa means ‘good friends’, which means serving one’s brother, sister, people, children, young people and the elderly and not forgetting anyone. Therefore, Akamasoa can be practiced in any country in the world. Because no one is closed and no one is insensitive to love, respect, truth, compassion and the act of sharing”.

What other idea do you think could be implemented to help in the development of people with needs and who suffer from food, education and employment problems? And what if there was another “branch” also in Brazil? We look forward to your comments.
