New botulinum toxin is approved in the United States –

Botulinum toxin is well known and used to correct wrinkles and expression marks. Now, something new has just arrived: DAXI, an abbreviated English term whose scientific term is daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm.

Just like the botulinum toxin we already know, DAXI is also an injectable type A toxin that causes muscle paralysis in the region where it is applied to reduce expression lines.

However, the novelty brings a differential related to the type of injected protein, which guarantees a durability of up to three times greater than the traditional botulinum toxin.

The results regarding the use of DAXI were published in a study released this week by Revance Therapeutics in the American Journal of Dermatology. It is worth mentioning that the new substance has been approved by the FDA, the US regulatory agency.

“This new treatment can be used in different areas to improve and invigorate the skin, to tighten the tissue and give the tone that the patient is looking for, softening the expression marks associated with aging”, explains dermatologist Valéria Campos, a Harvard specialist. Medical School, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

“According to the study, another big difference is the application method, which is done in a single injection, and not by areas, which makes the method more painless”, says the dermatologist.

According to the results obtained by the study as DAXI, the new substance has an effectiveness of 6 months or more. This means that the muscles where it is applied only begin to give in after 28 weeks of the procedure.

It is important to say that other similar toxins tend to last for a maximum of three to four months. “It seems that DAXI can also be used like all type A toxins, already used in Brazil, both from an aesthetic and therapeutic point of view. here”, emphasizes Valeria.

Another advantage of DAXI is durability, as the pandemic, stress, constant and high-impact physical activity can lead to a decrease in the durability of the procedure.

“My in-office experience demonstrates a significant drop in the duration of the toxin. Another important point is the interval between applications, which must be at least four months, because touch-ups can trigger a vaccine effect that makes the treatment lose its effect”, says the doctor.

In the United States, the new substance was approved for marketing on Thursday, September 8th. Responsible for the approval was the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates the use of these injectable neuromodulators.

“Now it is a matter of time for the DAXI can be used here, but the expectations are very promising”, emphasizes the dermatologist.

In addition to helping correct expression lines, according to the doctor, DAXI may also prove to be effective for the treatment of other conditions, including rosacea, migraines, scars, hyperhidrosis and even depression, as well as the toxin botulinum that is already known.

The American doctor Michelle Green carried out a study that points out that tests on patients showed maximum effectiveness of DAXI throughout clinical trials. The new substance was around 97% effective, a percentage that is higher than the average for all products in the same category.

Another relevant data is that, according to the manufacturer itself, 6% of users tested with DAXI had a headache after application. In addition, only 2% had problems with eyelid drooping. “Like any other toxin, it is possible that some patients present adverse side effects, which can be resolved in the office by a dermatologist”, explains Dr. Valerie.
