Meet the June saints and their traditions

Festa Junina: origin and tradition

Celebrating the month of June is an old habit in many parts of the world. Before the birth of Jesus, the pagan peoples of the Northern Hemisphere celebrated the summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year, which, there, happens in June. Festivities took place to ask the gods for the fertility of the land and ensure good harvests in the following months. With the advance of Christianity, the Church incorporated the tradition and, in the 6th century, the rites of the feast of the day of the solstice, on June 21st, passed to the day of the birth of Saint John the Baptist, on June 24th. Later, in the 13th century, the commemorative dates of Saint Anthony (13th) and Saint Peter (29th) were included in the liturgical calendar. That’s why these three saints are the patron saints of June festivals!

San Antonio, the matchmaker

He was born in Lisbon, in 1195, and baptized with the name Fernando de Bulhões. In 1220, he changed his name to Antony, joining the Franciscan Order. Patron of the poor and considered the matchmaker saint, he is also invoked to find lost objects.

Saint John the Baptist, protector of the sick

The Bible says that he was the one who baptized Jesus. He is the most famous of the three saints of June, so much so that the June feasts are known as the Joanine feasts or Saint John’s feasts. He is protector of the married and sick, protecting against headache and sore throat.

Saint Peter, owner of the rain

Born with the name of Simon, he was called Cephas (stone, in Aramaic) by Jesus, for his leadership. He is seen as the first pope of the Church, and, according to Catholic tradition, he was named keyring of heaven. He is assigned the responsibility of making it rain and changing the weather.

On June 13th buy a glass. Fill it with water, add three pinches of salt and a red rosebud. Leave the flower there until it withers. Take a bath with this water, repeating the phrase 13 times: “Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony, send me an Antonio”.

1. On June 13th, put a red ribbon in your bra, between your breasts, and wear it for seven days. Take it out and keep it inside an envelope and take it closed to the altar of Saint Anthony. Ask the saint to fulfill your wish and light a seven-day red candle.

2. On St. Anthony’s Day (the 13th), place two identical needles in a basin with water and two spoons of sugar. If the needles are together the next day, it is a sign that the wedding is near.
