Loving in solitude and mystery (To Love in Solitude and Mystery) is a love poem by the English writer Mary Shelley (1797-1851), published anonymously in the 1832 edition of the literary magazine The Keepsake. More than a hundred years later its authorship was determined and it was republished in the anthology: Unpublished letters and poems by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Newly Uncovered Letters and Poems by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley).

The narrator of the poem, however, wonders why her feelings persist even though such love will remain impossible. Her conclusion contradicts the idea of love according to the characteristics of romanticism, which saw in it an irresistible, implacable force, against which one can completely abandon oneself or break into a thousand pieces.
A third option emerges from hopelessness: love deserves to be lived, it deserves adoration for love itself, even when it is not reciprocated.
