5 love poems by Carolina Coronado

Carolina Coronado Romero de Tejada (1820-1911) was a Spanish poet of great notoriety in her time, to the point that she was described as the female Bécquer because of her extraordinary imagination.

Both the life and personality of Carolina Coronado seem ripped from a story by EA Poe. She began writing poems at the age of ten, with language that was difficult to associate with that age. At that time all of her poems were addressed to a certain “Alberto”, a kind of imaginary character who accompanied her throughout her life; and to whom she came to solemnly swear her perpetual love.

His romantic temperament was strongly accentuated by chronic catalepsy. The devastating attacks of this condition came periodically with total violence, to the point that Carolina Coronado herself declared that she had “died” numerous times. The terrible suffering that such an illness entails led her to hold the obsessive idea that she could be buried alive, so she took all kinds of precautions to prevent this from happening.

Furthermore, her obsession with being buried alive was transferred to her real husband, whom she embalmed and kept in her house, refusing to give him a Christian burial. In her poems, the mummy of her dead husband is sometimes referred to as “the man upstairs” or “the silent one.”
