Learn about exorcism and the four forms of possession

The Regina Apostolorum University in Rome declared in March of this year that the number of exorcisms has increased in recent years. One of the main reasons would be associated with the misuse of the internet and the dissemination of pages related to Satanism. In this way, some people could directly or indirectly suffer attacks from the devil, but without being possessed, although victims of mental manipulation and psychological abuse.

The word exorcism derives from the Greek exorkizein, which means “to unite by oath or to dislodge spirits” and involves a procedure performed only by prepared persons; whoever practices it is called an “exorcist” and the afflicted, “possessed”, who can show aggression, fury, hatred, in addition to xenolalia (foreign languages), the revelation of things that would be impossible to know and violent aversion to God, Jesus, Virgin Mary, crucifixes, holy water etc. As has already been verified in some sessions, objects begin to fly, putting the exorcist’s life at risk.

What drives someone to be possessed? Individuals with mental problems could be more susceptible to the influence of an obsessing spirit. The abuse of toxic substances, such as alcohol or drugs, in addition to negative emotions and the exaggeration of low frequency words makes them easy targets for evil spirits.

Catholic exorcism begins with Adjure te, spiritus nequissime, per Deum omnipotentem, which means: “I command you, evil spirit, by Almighty God”, and there are three categories: the baptismal (bless the child before baptism), the simple (purifies a place or thing to rid it of evil) and the real (which frees the human being from possession).

In Christianity, possession and exorcism are associated with evil and the process of liberation is done in a dramatic and violent way. In Jesus’ ministry, exorcism is also present; the best known is the one when a madman possessed by impure spirits invades a herd of swine and then shoots over a precipice.

The idea of exorcism is found all over the world and in all cultural traditions. It is even mentioned in the Hebrew scriptures, in the Old Testament in “1 Samuel” in which Saul becomes possessed and David exorcises him.

The official exorcist of the Vatican, Father Gabriele Amorth, said that there are bishops and cardinals installed in the Church who do not believe in Jesus and would be linked to the devil due to their moral misconduct.

It is good to emphasize that in Brazil, according to spiritism and Afro-Brazilian religions such as Umbanda and Candomblé, there are phenomena of possession of indoctrinating and enlightened spirits, bringing only benefits to the medium.

Understand the four forms of possession, according to spiritism

Backrest: The spirit is close to the person, but the influence is small. In this case, baths in water and salt or prayers such as the Our Father or the Creed, drive away this inferior spirit. Usually these spirits are from people who have disincarnated and belong to the possessed person’s family.

Oppressive Spirit: The spirit has the ability to “vampirize” the individual’s energy. The effects are felt as tiredness or the urge to cry, which may stop at any moment. It is indicated, in this case, to use a red bag containing a prayer inside it, always using it next to the body to neutralize the presence of this spirit. Also salt water baths are beneficial in this case. The reading of Psalm 22(23) is the most suitable against the oppressive spirit.

Obsession: The spirit can become so dominant in the astral body of the individual that it can even change the way of talking and doing things that it would not normally do in everyday life. He even fails to recognize relatives and people close to him.

Possession: In this case, the spirit takes over the person’s body, causing even poltergeist phenomena (set of spontaneously produced phenomena, consisting of noise and displacement of objects, which may have an indefinite duration). The process can be lengthy, taking a week, months or years. It must be treated immediately, as this spirit can lead to the death of the possessed. The exorcist resorts to prayers, holy water, smokers, rose essences and rue. Salt which is associated with spiritual purity is also used.
