“It was the most beautiful moment of my life”, the beautiful adoption story lived by Glória Maria, who even managed to breastfeed one of her daughters

Sometimes life provides us with surprises and twists, causing changes that were definitely not in our plans. That’s what happened to journalist Glória Maria, who was focused on her professional life and didn’t think about being a mother. Until life played a trick on her and literally put her daughters in front of her. It was love at first sight!

O awesome.club brings the inspiring and emotional story of how Glória Maria met her daughters and decided to become a mother out of love, and even how she was able to breastfeed one of them.

1. Glória Maria has been building a solid career in journalism since the 1970s, having become known for her independence and competence

Since she made her first report for Rede Globo, in 1971, Glória Maria has not stopped working and surprising us. In addition to being a reporter, she has been a TV news anchor and presenter, appearing on several TV shows such as RJTV, Jornal Hoje and Fantástico.

Glória stood out with a career dedicated to special reports, traveling to places with very different realities from Brazilians. She has, for example, traveled across the Sahara desert on a dromedary, jumped from the highest bungee jump in the world and took care of a giant panda, an endangered species. She’s even taken a ride on the Harry Potter train, the Hogwarts Express.

She is known in the journalistic environment for putting up with the biggest perrengues and never giving up on the story. In search of a good story, she has already gone without food, spent the night by a river in a sleeping bag and was even robbed. But all this only contributed to the image of a competent, independent, hardworking and resilient woman, in addition to her enormous charisma.

2. Succeeding in her career, Glória Maria began to be pressured to become a mother, which made her uncomfortable

Being a successful woman like Gloria is, and still with a public life, it is to be expected that people will be attentive to her personal decisions as well. Glória says that she was always pressured to have children, but she never listened. For her, work itself was her child, so it was important to focus on her professional life. The comparison between work and having a child was made by herself in an interview: “I cared for, loved, depended on him, I couldn’t think about the possibility of losing him”.

Despite never having felt hurt by the constant demands, Glória confesses that it bothered her because they were inappropriate. ‘They said, ‘Your time is running out. Once you’re old, you’ll regret it, because a woman was born to be a mother,’” she says. She started to feel like an “ET” for not fulfilling the role that other people thought she should fulfill. But the fact is, she really didn’t think about being a mother. But that would change.

3. With more than 30 years of work, Glória asked Rede Globo for a leave of absence to dedicate herself to traveling and working on social projects

With so much work, she decided to take a two-year sabbatical in 2007 to do some personal projects and rest. These were important years, which gave the journalist a new lease of life: “thank God I took two years off and now I have 30 more to go”. In those two years she traveled to Nigeria and India, where she volunteered to help needy families and orphaned children. “I saw so many children suffering, alone (…) that I was sure that one day I would work with them”.

Yes, she was aware that in Brazil there are also children in this situation, but this was the first time that Glória was able to help anonymously. Back in our country, the journalist went to work for a few months at an orphans’ shelter in Salvador, in the state of Bahia, where she had the most important encounter of her life.

4. The encounter of Glória Maria’s life: “I never wanted to be a mother. Work filled me, my life was perfect. They came about by chance.”

The work at the shelter in Salvador took place a few months before the end of her years away from television. One day she saw Maria, who was almost a year old, coming towards her. “When I saw her crawling, when she turned to me, I said ‘has changed’”, she says. Gloria, who until then felt that her life was perfect, felt that this was her daughter. “That’s something I can’t explain,” she commented. And she decided to adopt it.

She had also already fallen in love with another baby, Laura, who was less than a month old. In the process of adopting Maria, she discovered that they were both sisters, information unknown to the other people at the shelter. Glória had no doubts: she started the process of adopting the two girls. The entire process took 11 months, during which time the journalist moved to Salvador to be close to her daughters.

5. After so many stories to tell as a journalist, now Glória Maria collects maternity stories

With the children at home and living this new dream, Glória started to collect those special moments of a new mom. Talking to Serginho Groisman on the program Altas Horas, she shared two unforgettable moments. One of them was the first time Maria called her mother. She says that “one day she looked at me and ‘mama’ was the first word she said and then Laura”. The emotion was great, so much so that Glória added that “the first day I heard it, my heart stopped beating”.

The second moment was unforgettable for Glória and inspiring for future mothers. According to the journalist, Maria always asked to breastfeed, and even tried, but her mother had no milk. However, after trying so hard, one day Gloria managed to breastfeed. She says that Maria reacted with happiness, saying “mom, milk, milk!”.

Not understanding how this would be possible, Glória went to her gynecologist to ask for an explanation. And she reported that “they explained that there are cases that because of hormones this can happen”. And she added: “When the child asks a lot this can happen and it happened to me and I think it was the most beautiful moment of my life”.

6. Glória educates her daughters Maria and Laura to have culture and respect for others, in addition to controlling their screen time

Glória reported that she did not hide from her daughters the fact that they were adopted. “They have therapeutic support and, since they were little, they know that they came out of my heart. Our connection is based on truth.” However, Mom doesn’t like it when the press puts the term “adopted” in the headlines. “I’m terrified. Because they are no longer my adopted children. The birth certificate, as she has written on the birth certificate, does not read “adopted daughter”.

Furthermore, she also revealed some details about how she is raising her daughters. With electronics, for example, they have limited time to use the tablet, and their Instagram accounts are monitored by Mom. Videos they can only watch on their mother’s cell phone and only on YouTube Kids. For the journalist, prejudice also has no place in this family. The daughters are friends with the children of the nannies, the driver, the doorman of the building. “They are children who have an eye for everything,” Gloria said.

Another curious detail is that the journalist intended to give her daughters a different cultural background from what she herself had as a child. Therefore, in early childhood, they only watched children’s musicals, watched classical ballet and listened to classical music. Until, around the age of 5 or 6, they overheard the song Show das Poderosas, by Anitta, on the car radio. “And they became Anitta’s biggest fans”, she added.

7. Undoubtedly, among all the trips that Glória Maria made, the one to Salvador was the most important

Glória Maria traveled the world and met its wonders and tragedies, important, famous and anonymous people. But none of these trips compares to the one she made to Salvador, no encounter was more important than the one she had with her daughters, Maria and Laura. “You get out of yourself and start to live for the other”, she says, “So this is a journey that you can’t compare to”.

The journalist has already inspired and moved us with her reports, and now she inspires us with her story of adoption and motherhood. Do you know any inspiring adoption stories? Share with us!
