Serginho Groisman always dreamed of being a father and found the right person to be the mother of his child.

Serginho Groisman, who many know only as a presenter, actually started his career as a journalist. But the title he really wanted to have for many years was Dad, at the right time. And that time came when he was already 64 years old.

O awesome.club tells the story of how Serginho Groisman knew how to wait patiently to fulfill his dream of being a father, at the right time and with the perfect person.

Born in São Paulo, in 1950, to a Polish mother and a Romanian father, Serginho dropped out of law and history schools before graduating as a journalist — and was even a university professor. He started his career as a presenter on TV Gazeta, but his first successful program was Matéria Prima, on TV Cultura. This caught the attention of Silvio Santos, who hired him to present the Programa Livre on SBT in 1991, where he stayed for ten years.

The differential that made the Programa Livre successful was the audience made up of students, who actively participated in the interviews and even completed the presenter’s catchphrases. It was not just artists who were present on the stage of Programa Livre, but also specialists who brought relevant debates to young people in the 1990s. Surrounded by young people daily, Serginho had a dream, that of being a father.

In an interview given in 1998 to Playboy, a former magazine by Editora Abril, he was asked if he thought that, if he had a child, he would get along as well with him as with the young people in his audience. Serginho replied: “I hope so. AND I’m going have a child. When you find someone you can talk to: This is the mother of my child.” He was dating at the time, but said they hadn’t talked about having children yet and that he preferred to wait and see if it would work out before discussing the matter.

In 2000, it was Globo’s turn to bet on Serginho’s success, hiring him to present the program Altas Horas. It was precisely when he was reporting for Globo in Amazonas, in 2006, that the presenter met Fernanda Molina. At the time, Fernanda, who was doing social work with needy children, granted an interview to Serginho. Neither of them imagined what was to come.

Fernanda, who is 24 years younger than Serginho, is shy and prefers to stay out of the spotlight. As the presenter also never had the habit of giving details about her personal life, it was a perfect match. Still, in an interview, he already talked about having a child: “It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s something we want. To say we are working on it is an understatement, but we have plans.”

The relationship didn’t take long to start. The year after the interview, in 2007, they already got together in an informal wedding. In 2015, with Fernanda pregnant, the couple decided to formalize the union in a wedding party filled with celebrities. However, living up to his reputation as a reserved person, Serginho did not allow photographers to enter the scene. Full of commitments to the weekly program, the hubby had to postpone the honeymoon. In the same year of the wedding, Thomas was born.

Thomas was born in 2015 to the joy and fulfillment of parents. In an interview, Serginho stated that “fatherhood has always been a dream, but it has to do with the woman who will be the mother of your child”. He only decided to be a father at the age of 64 because he realized that his relationship with Fernanda was the strongest he had in his entire life. Now, with a focus on their child’s education, the parents are committed to providing good energy for Thomas.

The presenter also told Veja magazine that he went through some difficulties to take care of his son while recording Altas Horas at his home. “I wake up with him, play with him, and then go upstairs to work. Thomas has become the king of the house.” Even though he’s very busy, Serginho wants the boy to have good childhood memories, unlike himself, who doesn’t remember when he was 5 years old.

In Serginho’s words: “Before, work came first, and since his arrival, things have been reversed. Our family ties are stronger.” Dad still melts every time he talks about his son: “Feelings came into my life, things I had no idea I could feel. I think every parent feels it and knows it. I still have the blessing of him being a super cool baby.”

And he also tells how fatherhood changed him even inside, “it changed my way of dealing with TV work a lot”, as he explains. “And it was the people who accompany me who felt it, first it came from outside. People said: ‘You’re different, you’re lighter’. From then on I really started to notice,” he admitted. When recording in the studio, sometimes Fernanda takes Thomas and stays outside. Serginho does the interviews listening to his son, and this inspires him.

Those who follow Altas Horas must have already noticed a new catchphrase from the presenter, instead of the famous “talk, guys”: “Now, the only thing I insist, irresistibly, is to end the program saying his name. Thomas, Thomas! I’m going home”.

With a career established, love found and a dream come true, Serginho explains that he doesn’t think much about the future: “I like to live in the present. What does it mean to design a future if you don’t know how you’re going to get there — or if you’re going to get there? Right now, all he wants to do is enjoy fatherhood. “I wake up every day to the sound of Thomas. On the day I don’t wake up? Ended. I don’t think about what he’ll be like without me.”
